During this summer’s lengthy European travels, one of our longest stays was in Florence. There’s a lot to see there — much of which we had missed on our previous visit in the pre-pandemic era, when we barely did more than pass through on our way to and from other places. So one reason for the longer stay was that we had some catching up to do. In more practical terms, we feel that after a lot of active travel it is good to stop and stay in one place a bit longer — and Florence was that place. But this photograph is not in Florence…

… which might lead you to wonder why I’m posting it here. Well, it is very close to Florence! Friends had recommended a visit to Fiesole, a smaller town in the hills above Florence. So one morning we caught the bus up there for a partial day of wandering and looking at long views of the Arno Valley and Florence. This was a quick photograph I made while wandering through the town — a woman taking a cigarette break outside her dry cleaning shop.

People in front of a Lisbon shop on a steeply-inclined street at night.

We spent four nights (and days) in Lisbon during out summer 2023 travels. It is a fascinating city, with a very different character than Porto, the other Portuguese city we visited this time. It seem more urbanized and modern, but like Porto — perhaps even more so — it is partially defined by its very hilly terrain. For people like us, who walk a lot when we travel, this was not a trivial factor!

We stayed in an area of older, narrow streets some distance above the city’s famous elevator — though we never made use of it. More than once we followed a walking route down to the central city in an area near the railroad station, following some streets that were exceptionally steep in places. This shop is on one of those steep sections, and I photographed it as we walked back up one evening, as its light spilled out onto the sidewalk and passers-by.

It isn’t that we have no shops like this in the US — it is that they are so rare. But in Siena (and in many other places we visited) they are everywhere. Yes, this is a “tourist town,” but still — how many tourists are buying lots of cured meats? (Hint: they are a problem with carry-on airline luggage.) Everything about the front of this shop is a bit… unusual. The lovely little pink pig, the real pig head attached to the wall just left of center, the strange red curtain.

No, we did not go into this shop — even though it was on my agenda for this trip after I had seen and photographed it when we visited something like seven years ago. It is funny how inaccurate memory can be — I thought it was on an entirely different street in Siena.

Boba Tea Shop, Night

A San Francisco Chinatown Boba Tea shot at night.

This is another San Francisco night street photography photograph, made possible by the advent of very good, very small digital cameras that can now make good images in very dark conditions. Places like this one, with narrow streets, bright interiors, and a fair amount of ambient light from business signs, become viable subjects for the photographers working with handheld cameras and no electronic flash. In this sort of photography I often work quickly, pausing only long enough to frame up an interesting urban landscape and look for people to populate it.

As a person who frequently photographs on foot in San Francisco and who has lived reasonably close to The City for decades, I know some parts of San Francisco pretty well at this point. I’m frequently in and around Chinatown when I’m up there — because a friend suggests it, because I pass through on my way to another destination, or because it is my destination. For the most part I eschew the busy, commercialized stretch of Grant Street that most think of when they hear “Chinatown” in San Francisco. But at night it becomes more interesting to me, and the larger number and variety of ambient light sources are both interesting and helpful. The bright interior of this shop contrasts with the dark world on the sidewalk, and it is hard for me to say what is actually going on in the shop.
