Wetlands Sunrise, Winter

The sun rises above wetlands, barely visible through San Joaquin Valley winter fog

We arrived at this place in California’s San Joaquin Valley well before dawn on New Year’s Day — with some of us having driven as many as two hours in the dark to get there. After the drive, it is always a special moment when we get out of our cars in the cold for warm greetings and hear the sound of cranes and geese waking up in the dark distance. Knowing that the sunrise won’t wait for us, we then turn to unpacking cameras and tripods and to fitting lenses, and then we move out along the perimeter road to find the right combination of birds and atmosphere and light for photographing the dawn that will begin our full day of photography.

This morning was foggy, but not so foggy that we would not see the sunrise. With this in mind we headed to the west side of the wetlands, where we could have a view back across the flatlands and ponds toward the sun rising above the fog and the distant Sierra Nevada. As the sky began to glow we each estimated where we thought the sun would appear, and we found good spots to set up our cameras. As the very top of the orb of the sun appeared on the horizon I quickly made a small adjustment to my location to place the sunrise between the two distant tree silhouettes and to include some interesting foreground water. This was one of the very first exposures I made, at a point where the sun was still so obscured behind the low fog that I could look directly at it — within moments it rose above the ground mist and became extremely bright. I continued to photograph, but in the end this first photograph of soft light, fog, and pastel colors was my favorite.

Fog, Trees, and Pond

Tule fog nearly obscures a San Joaquin Valley pond and surrounding trees

This particular fog condition developed quickly as we were out in the San Joaquin Valley early on a winter morning photographing birds. The winter tule fog in the Valley is often quite thin — so thin, in fact, that you can sometimes seen the stars and moon above on a night when you can barely make out object 100 feet in front of you. This was that sort of fog, but a gentle breeze was also moving it around and changing the conditions from moment to moment. I recall coming to this spot, where the marshland water extends for some distance, and noticing that the trees were alternating between the state of “barely visible” and “not visible at all,” and the fog was brightly lit from the morning sun and sky.

This sort of subject is a bit challenging to photograph and to work with in post. The contrast is obviously very low, and details are hard to see, making focus a bit tricky. And the low contrast almost certainly requires a bit of work in post to get the right combination of diffuse, luminous atmosphere and enough detail to produce an image that makes sense. Here, since the sky was actually quite bright, I wanted to push the sky close to white but still retain the subtle shapes of the high clouds. And beyond all of that, I wanted the photograph to evoke the feelings of stillness and mystery that arise on such a morning.

Flock of Cranes, Marsh

A large flock of sandhill cranes gathers in a shallow San Joaquin Valley marsh

This large group of sandhill cranes was most cooperative with us during our mid-February visit to their habitat out in California’s San Joaquin Valley. While there are places in the valley where it is reasonably simple to get quite close to them, at this place they often hang out a good distance from the areas accessible to visitors—and many times the photography is therefore limited to very long shots or to birds passing overhead.

In general this was a somewhat different day as far as birds were concerned. The common mid-day lull in their activity was less pronounced, and for almost the entire day they tended to be quite active. Large groups of many different kinds of geese flew in and out, often collecting in large flocks in empty fields. Earlier a group of cranes had stood close to the access road near the larger group of geese. And a bit later in the day, a very large group of cranes settled in on this shallow pond and was willing to remain there as we photographed.

Wetland Fog, Dawn

First dawn light glows faintly through winter fog above a San Joaquin Valley wetland marsh

This was definitely shot during the morning blue hour, the pre-dawn light was here tinged with pink color from first sunlight striking high clouds far above the ground-hugging layer of thick fog. This is another photograph from my favorite Central Valley haunt, where I often go to photograph birds during the cool months of late-fall through very early spring.

The fog was thick but not deep, and as we drove to this area we were able to look up through it and see the predawn sky even though the murk was thick enough at ground level to force us to drive very slowly. Arriving at our destination, it was foggy and still, but as the first light of morning began to arrive, the pink color of high clouds illuminated the fog and created a glow of a somewhat unusual color. I had a few minutes along the edge of a pond to photograph in this fleeting light. The first photographs, like this one, were a combination of blue and faint pink/purple. A moment later the pink became even more intense, and then as the light increased the color faded and the fog became more transparent, allowing a view upwards through it to those higher clouds.
