While this may not be a sunflower, at least it is blue and yellow. This isn’t flower that I recognize — though I was told its name at one point, a name that I had not heard before. It was growing down close to the ground, in a shady area at the garden where we were recently photographing.

I can’t claim to be any particular sort of flower photographer, even though I am attracted to such photographs and do try my hand at them occasionally. (Someone else in our household specializes in photographing small things like flowers.) This flower and those around it were still covered with early morning moisture.

Recently I have begun looking through my archives for photographs featuring the yellow and blue color scheme of Ukraine’s flag — you might think of it as an emerging “blue and yellow” series. I’ve also been on the lookout for new subjects that feature the colors of this flag, a new symbol of the fight against tyranny and against the brutal invasion of this country by Russia and its dictator.

I’ll mostly leave that as the primary text accompanying this photograph, with only a bit of reference to the subject of the image. Recently I was photographing a garden that is beginning to emerge from winter dormancy as spring approaches. Mainly we went there to view and photograph new flowers, but here and there I found evidence of winter and even of autumn, including a few leaves still bearing autumn colors.

Morning, Beneath Desert Mountains

Morning light comes to badlands terrain beneath tall desert mountains.

On the final morning of my late-January visit to Death Valley National Park I decided to visit a location that I rarely photograph. I suppose there were two reasons for my choice. It wasn’t that far from where I was camped, and I wanted to get back to camp by mid-morning to take things down in preparation for my departure. In addition, it is a location that, frankly, hasn’t attracted me all that much for photography. I had been there before several times and came away with little to show for it. (Despite this, one client did purchase a number of prints from this location some years ago.)

An offhand comment by a friend had suggested a different way to look that the place, and as I looked at it from a distance earlier in the week I saw some things that caught my attention. So I headed out there before dawn on this final morning and followed a trail out to the edge of some interesting badlands country. As I worked that subject the light was working its way down the face of the bare desert mountains to the northwest, so I turned my camera that direction as the play of light and shadow evolved.

Winter Wetland Trees

A copse of winter wetland trees along the Pacific Flyway, New Year’s Day 2022.

This photograph is another one from our New Year’s Day adventure with friends under the skies of the Pacific Skyway. We joined up for New Year’s Eve and then New Year’s Day morning to celebrate the arrival of the new year along with a few tens of thousands of our bird friends, something that has become a tradition among this group of friends and (mostly) photographers.

I think that most of us would agree that it is the combination of birds and fog that primarily attracts us to these places in the winter. The attraction of fog might seem strange to those who live in it and have to drive in it and sometimes tolerate weeks of damp and gray. But its presence lends mystery to this landscape and creates an unending variety of conditions of mystery and light. On the morning I made this photograph, the skies were mostly clear, though a combination of high clouds and very thin fog near the ground softened the light on this group of trees.
