If you are following along, it may start to be difficult to follow the itinerary of our late-spring trip to the British Isles. We started in Scotland, spent time in Ireland, then headed to England for about three weeks. The first week in England was spent on a walk between villages in the Cotswolds. We had heard about people doing that, and it sounded fun — and we were able to meet up with relatives who live in Europe.
Walking the Cotswolds could not be more different than hiking my familiar Sierra Nevada wilderness. The elevations are consistently low — I don’t think we climbed higher than about 1000′. Villages are close enough that you start the day in one of them, stop in another for lunch, and then arrive at a third one where you’ll stay the night. And this is not exactly wilderness — it is “rural,” which means walking along and sometimes through private estates, sheep pastures, and grain fields. I made this photograph on the last day of our walk as storm clouds were building. Yes, we got rained on!
