I arrived here well before sunrise, thinking that clouds overhead and clear sky on the eastern horizon might produce a colorful sunrise. It did! So I made monochrome photographs! OK, I do have some color photographs of the early morning color, too, but I really did come back with as many monochrome photographs as color photos. Maybe MONO Lake calls for MONOchrome images?
If you have followed me for a while and have read about my photography at Mono Lake you already know this, but for the new folks: Much of what I love about photographing this place is its vast scale — the distances are almost incomprehensible. The huge flat expanse is such a contrast with the verticals of the nearby Sierra Nevada crest. A breeze on this morning produced some waves on the lake, giving the water’s surface a bit of texture.
