After promising New York street photography for the past few days — and then sharing cool mountain images instead — here’s a photograph from our recent, late-August visit to Manhattan. (This was the same trip that eventually took us up to Vermont woods. ) Our previous New York City visit was last winter, when the city was in the throes of a very bad peak in the covid epidemic. At that time the whole place seemed almost oppressive. This trip felt different — more like the New York we remember from the before times. It is still not back to normal, but we were able to get out and walk a lot and the sense of dread that was in the air last winter was gone.

I’m fascinated by almost everything visual in Manhattan — the crowds, individuals, the architecture, the urban landscape, and more. I almost always walk around with a camera handy and often keep it literally in hand. That was the case as we walked through a busier section of town and I photographed this group of people queued up at the crosswalk. A closer look reveals quite a variety of people and appearances — there’s a shirtless guy int he crosswalk at left, the anxious people trying to get a head start on crossing the street, the woman near the left with the 1000 mile stare, one guy with a mask on, and more.

Yesterday’s photograph came from the same trip that produced this photograph. Before we headed off for a family event in the green mountains of Vermont we spent four days in the concrete “mountains” and canyons of Manhattan. New York City is definitely not back to normal yet, but it feels far less oppressive than when we visited last winter during the height of one of the covid variants. Back then the streets were largely empty; now there are people out and about once again. We took advantage of this to wander the areas around the lower half of Central Park and some distance south of the park, where I made this photograph.

To some people it seems strange that a supposed “nature photographer” would want to spend time in a busy urban center like Manhattan, much less take a small camera into the street and make pictures of that life. But I like the contrast — the speed and immediacy of street photography, the necessity of making quick and intuitive decisions, and more. I grabbed two frames of this woman crouched against a brick wall and talking on the phone as we walked by, barely breaking stride to make the exposure.

On one level this is a photograph of a half-eaten breakfast roll on the paper bag it was packed in, sitting on the window sill of a Manhattan hotel room on a cloudy winter morning. We can look at it as a little still life, I suppose, though perhaps a less appealing one than the traditional images of fruit and such. But there’s a story behind it.

For us a typical Manhattan breakfast might be coffee and pastry picked up somewhere on the street or, if we had the time and inclination, a “real breakfast” with eggs and more in a restaurant somewhere. (We follow a “two-and-a-half-meals-per-day plan when traveling, where the half meal could be morning or midday and is usually espresso plus something small.) But this visit was during the start of the Manhattan holiday omicron surge — what a strange description! — and those crowded little restaurants and shops were not so appealing. Fortunately, the Mille-Feuille Bakery was on the ground level of our hotel, so we’d head down there, pick something up, and return to our room… where the morning ritual was to start the covid rapid test, then sip coffee and eat pastry while the 15 minutes passed.

New Yorkers may laugh at me for pointing this out (one already did!) but apparently “Zabars” is kind of a “thing” here. The market was located a few blocks north of where we were staying during roughly the last week of 2021, and our walks on the largely deserted streets in the area frequently took us past it. From the outside, at least to a non-New Yorker who doesn’t know what it is, the market doesn’t look like anything special — but since my visit I have heard, from more than one source, that it is “something special.”

We never went inside. Hey, there’s a pandemic. We avoided going inside much of anything besides our hotel and the places where our “kids” live plus a few outside dining spots. (For my California friends — eating al fresco in Manhattan during December is a, uh, “special” experience!) Several things about this photograph seemed to suggest the times we are in, including the masked fellow with his dog. If you had come across him in this spot two years ago, you might have and questions. Now? Just another guy on the sidewalk! The emergency orange pylons seemed appropriate here, too.
