During my November 1 fall color foray to Yosemite Valley, I ended up spending a lot of time photographing these black oaks. In addition to providing the expected fall color, smoke from a nearby managed fire drifted in and out, varying from quite thick to just enough to add some atmosphere. The haze made the light more visible, sometimes producing light beams among the silhouetted trees.

For this composition I decided to use the dark shapes of closer trees to frame more brightly lit trees out in the meadow. On a technical note, managing the extreme dynamic range between the highlights of backlit leaves and the deep shadows in the foreground and near the sides was a challenge. As always, the trick was to try to get enough shadow detail to work with in post while avoiding blown out highlights.

The light changed quickly and the scene fell into shadow as the sun dropped behind the Sierra crest — if I worked quickly I might catch the last bit of light on the foreground aspen grove. It would have been humorous to watch me work in a distinctly non-landscape-photographer mode, quickly extending tripod legs, attaching lens to tripod and camera to lens, locating a composition, figuring out an exposure and grabbing a few frames as the last light began to fade.

The trees in this photograph exemplify features of this year’s aspen color season. In many places whole groves seemed to produce good color all at once, different from the typical gradual pattern. There was also good color late in the season, perhaps due to a lack of big storms, particularly wind storms.

Pedestrians round a corner on a narrow Siena street lined with tall buildings.

During our 2023 European travels we finally returned to Siena after missing earlier opportunities to go there during the pandemic. Seven years earlier we were there for literally only hours, spending an afternoon on a day trip from where we were staying in Chianti. We were entranced by the city, with its remarkable maze of narrow streets and large central plaza, Il Campo.

We made a point of scheduling a longer say on this return visit, with time to wander the streets, sit in cafes and restaurants, visit important sites, and make photographs. This scene is along a non-busy (remarkable, yes?) back street that roughly parallels two much busier thoroughfares. The narrow width of the route, the tall buildings, and the varied colors and textures are typical of this area.

Black Oaks, Autumn

A row of tall black oak trees in autumn colors, Yosemite Valley.

These trees, located in an iconic Yosemite Valley Meadow, call to almost photographer. They are interesting at almost any time of year — whether skeletal silhouettes in winter snow, brilliantly green in the spring, or brightly colorful in autumn light. This specific line of trees has always challenged me — one of those “this should be easy” scenes in which it can be difficult to find effective compositions.

On this autumn day the conditions were a combination of the normal for fall — colorful leaves, golden-brown meadows — and something less common, namely smoke from a nearby management fire. At times the smoke was thick, as you’ll see in some other photographs I made during this visit. But midday breezes thinned the smoke, leaving the colors and shapes of the tall trees more clearly visible.
