Morning Forest

From time to time I experiment with ways to portray the landscape in a more abstract fashion. I often refer to these photographs as “imaginary landscapes.” While the line between “real” and “imaginary” can be pretty fuzzy in photography, these photographs make no pretense of portraying the objective facts of the scene. (To be clear, no photograph is fully objective, but I digress…)

In this case I used intentional (or perhaps unintentional — you decide) techniques to blur the details of the scene, leaving the biggest elements intact but leaving a lot to the imagination. The original scene is the edge of the forest next to a small lake on a foggy morning.

Last December we were out for a cold afternoon and evening walk in Paris, and on our way back towards our hotel we passed a carousel set up in a square near shops and other upscale amenities, apparently as part of holiday season events. I could not resist making a few photographs of the merry-go-round and its patrons.

Most of my night photographs are as sharply focused as the images I create in the daytime. But sometimes I like to take advantage of the low light levels and play with longer handheld exposures that incorporate motion blur. In cases like this one the blur better suggests the motion in the scene.

A photograph of some colorful things.

This is just about color… unless you want to make it about something else. Such a photograph could be intentional (to the extent that photographs are “intentional” — read the second paragraph), but the level of serendipity in this one is high, hence the title.

There’s an odd idea that photographs are objective records — but that’s clearly not true. Even in cases where some sort of evidentiary standard is followed, decisions about aspects of what gets recorded and how it gets recorded are subjective. And beyond that limited use for photographs, once we get into the realm of images that are intended to express something, photographs are often far from objective records. One of my favorite expressions: “All photographs lie.” (I could refine that a bit, but there’s not space in this post.)

What this photograph contains is not exactly clear. I would be flattered if you thought that it resulted from something I did intentionally, but I can understand that you might also suspect that it could have been an accident. Perhaps I accidentally hit the shutter release button while handling the camera and, perhaps, it just happened to pan across something that produced interesting, angular patterns of light and color. Perhaps. One can never be certain.

I often have mixed reactions to camera-motion blur photographs. On one hand obscuring the objective subject is interesting, and often the resulting abstract patterns of color and light can be fascinating. On the other hand, some iterations of the technique have become cliches, and when I see them I sometimes think, “Not another one of those!” And then, someone does “one of those ” that catches my attention!
