Considering its location, jammed into an urban block in Portland, this garden is a remarkably quiet and serene place. In fact, my visit convinced me that this feeling is contagious, altering the attitudes and behavior of visitors who come through the gates from that urban environment.

We had a few afternoon hours to enjoy the place some years back on a visit to Portland, a visit on which we went to many of the city’s lovely gardens. This photograph looks into a small room, across a game table, through a window, and out into the garden.

One white globe lily flower and several buds about to bloom.

Since a recent post regarding this same type of wildflower went into some detail about it, I’ll try to keep this post a bit shorter. (Note: I wrote “try,” not “promise.” ;-) This is a white globe lily flower, one of my favorites from a local spot that I’ve been visiting for decades, especially in spring, and to which I’ve returned again this spring.

The importance of these “local spots” cannot be over-emphasized. I’ve seen a lot of photographers get trapped by the “I only photograph amazing places” mantra. Some of them, whose naturally busy lives limit the frequency with which they can drop everything and head off to an exotic locale, become frustrated with their photography. I understand — it is important to “do photography” almost continuously in order to produce and maintain the instincts of seeing that are so important. But seeing can happen locally, too. In fact, practicing (a term I know from a life in music) as often as possible, even with subjects that might not be your first choice, is crucially important… and it can be done as close as your own back yard or in your neighborhood.

The white globe lily just might be my favorite wildflower from my local hills. I have hiked these areas for decades, but it was only perhaps 20 years ago when I first became aware of this flower, back when I started to hike one favorite area throughout the entire year, no longer limiting myself to the “nice weather” seasons. While walking down a little ravine that I had been in many times before, on a damp spring morning I noticed these flowers growing along the trail in grassy areas, and I’ve looked for them ever since.

This is a single specimen, but there are often several of them growing together. Because I often choose to photograph them early in the day when the light is not too harsh — they don’t hold up well visually in bright light — there is often a bit of dew on the blossoms, and the background is in shadow. This time I think I managed to visit close to the end of the bloom, and some specimens had already formed seed pods.

I truly don’t remember this photograph at all! Sometimes when doing street photograph (in this case at the start of five weeks or what was largely street photography) I photograph quickly and then almost forget quite a few of the photographs as I move on to the next thing, trusting that my ideas about the subject will come back when I see the photograph again as I do my post processing. In this case, no such luck!

I don’t usually photograph graffiti — in fact I used to make it my policy to almost never post graffiti or to disfigure tags that the photographs might contain. But in this case there may be enough in the scene to convince me to let it go. The layers of time and culture in this photograph are easy to overlook, but when you stop to think about it they are quite amazing. I’m sure that this wall and old door have stood for a long time, likely created by and for people who would have little concept of how the surroundings have evolved. The “stuff” on the door includes its own kinds of diversity, ranging from informal scrawls to bits of paper that were created with the intention of affixing them to place like this. And on the left we have the bright colors of  the edge of a sign in (I presume) a Chinese language, itself visually contrasting with yet connecting to the newer writings on the green door.
