Windsurfing Photographs

Last March I was over on the coast near Davenport, California in the afternoon, and I wandered down to a beach where I’ve photographed in the past. I’d previously gone there to photograph birds and seascapes, but on this day it turned out that the dozens of windsurfers provided a more interesting subject.

I mention this because I’m finally finding time to go through the hundreds of frames I shot that day, and I’ve been posting them over in the Gallery – you can find a good number of them if you check out the recent updates page today, or you can go straight to the windsurfing page.

Late spring morning on the Big Sur Coast near Bixby Bridge. I had just enough time to drive down to this point and back on a weekend morning when the sun was breaking through the coastal fog earlier than usual.

A Brief Big Sur Photo Excursion

I’ve lived in California almost my entire life. I frequently head down to and beyond Monterey and Carmel to photograph the upper portion of the Big Sur Coastline. But I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that I’ve never driven the entire Big Sur coast, much less photographed it. I was finally able to rectify that situation last week.

Point Reyes Headlands

Point Reyes Headlands
“Point Reyes” — oint Reyes with coastal haze, foreground cove with elephant seals, and Drakes Bay in the distance.

I made this photograph in incredibly windy conditions. (I can hear other Point Reyes regulars saying, “duh!” at this point…) It was the kind of afternoon when no tripod is sturdy enough to really hold the camera still – so I waited and shot during relative lulls in the gale. If you look closely at the lower right corner you can see sea lions hauled out on the beach.

To expand a bit, the weather at this spectacular location is often quite different from that in other nearby California locations. The “point” extends a good distance out into the ocean here, with the result being cold temperatures, lots of wind, and frequent heavy fog. The fog was not present on this day, but the wind surely was!
