Today we take a little break from nature photography and head to San Francisco, one of my favorite places to do street photography. I suppose one reason it is a favorite is that it is so close — typically I hop on a train very early in the morning to arrive there around dawn (or a bit later this time of year) and then set out on foot to explore. It is also a favorite because, well, it is San Francisco. What a place — even with recent changes and overcrowding. The City borders to San Francisco Bay, it is full of diverse and interesting neighborhoods, and the people range from locals to out-of-town visitors.

This photograph is bound to seem a bit strange to those of you have stuck with me through a few weeks of redwood forest photography — what happened and what’s going on here?! I don’t want to explain too much — partly because a photograph can often reveal whatever it has to say on its own, partly because I don’t want to clutter it up with too many words, and partly because you can discover some stuff about it on your own if you choose to. Color is one clue…

I frequently photograph in the Mono Basin, at and around Mono Lake. I have been photographing there long enough that I’ve learned to look beyond the famous tufa formations — worthy photographic subjects that they area — and try to find other elements that also are intrinsic to the character of the place. The lake itself is one subject — its huge expanse, the immense quiet and stillness often found there, the birds, and the sky. The surrounding terrain is also very interesting once you spend some time looking away from the lake: the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, gentle terrain rising to eastward mountains, ponderosa pine forests, and more.

Many years ago I became intrigued by these trees that grow a good distance up the sides of the volcanic domes rising just south of the lake. At certain times the light bathes them in color and can turn a normally drab scene into something quite striking. ON this morning the sun had just risen into hazy skies, and there was a great deal of red in the light, contrasting with the very blue color of the shadows.

Late-summer forest floor littered with fallen cones, branches, needles, and leaves.

As summer comes to an end in the high country of the Sierra Nevada, as it was during my early September visit this year, the moisture, growth, and greenery of the early season begins to give way to the drier and more brown conditions signaling the coming of fall. The short period of rapid summer growth ends, and the mountains seems quieter.

We spent several days camping and photographing at a small lake, taking the time to explore and even to return to places to photograph them more than once. By staying in one place for a time, it becomes possible to see things that are easily overlooked during a shorter stay. Initially the dramatic granite features around the lake drew our attention, but after a few days we became more interested in subtler things, including a low, grassy area near the outlet stream of the lake that some of us might have first dismissed. On this morning I was simply wandering slowly though this area, now looking more closely and at smaller things, when I saw the still-shadowed ground densely covered by a carpet of pine cones.

I’m on a bit of a minor Yosemite run right now, as I’ve found a bit of extra time to get back to my review of the past ten year’s of image files. I had almost completed the task earlier this year, but the work stalled out a few months back somewhere in the spring of 2011. I’m now up to June of that year and hoping to continue the slog!

I made this photograph right about the time that Tioga Pass first opened for the season – not the first day, but very close to it. I had gotten up very early that morning to photograph in the pre-dawn cold near Tioga Pass, and from there began to work my way back to the west towards Tuolumne Meadows. I stopped at a small roadside lake to photograph a larger scene and as I was setting up for that shot I looked down and noticed the newly formed ice with its fractured texture reflecting the morning’s blue sky and supporting a variety of things that had blown down including a couple of pine cones. If you look carefully you can just make out rocks and grasses beneath the ice.
