Curve in the Canyon
“Curve in the Canyon” — A gravel wash curves through narrows in a Death Valley canyon.

The sensations upon entering one of these canyons after walking in desert heat and sun are striking. It is suddenly much darker and much quieter, and often the air is still. At this bend in the canyon, the walls and edges conspired to create a sort of spiral shape with everything centering on the bigger and warmer-toned section in the upper center of the photograph.

Hiking these canyons they ofcanten start to feel like a steady progression back and forth — a turn to the right is soon followed by one to the left, and so forth. In some canyons this leads to a somewhat humorous “just one more”situation. I might check my watch and note that it is about my turn-around time. I tell myself, “First, just hike to the next curve.” Getting there I tell myself, “You can take a look at what is beyond this section.” So I round the bend and see the canyon continues… and, of course, I just have to continue on to the next bend… and then next… and the one after that.

Canyon Bend

Canyon Bend, Death Valley.
“Canyon Bend” — A narrow desert wash curves though the depths of a slot canyon, Death Valley.

This photograph was made in a somewhat remote Death Valley canyon — access requires a long drive on primitive roads followed by a bit of walking. On this late February day it was very quiet here, and I saw only two other parties during my visit. We often see photographs of very colorful Utah slot canyons, but this photograph is more typical of Death Valley, where the rocks are more likely dark and much less colorful. But the shade and the quiet are just as wonderful.

I often photograph canyons in vertical “portrait” format. The feeling of these landscapes tends to be vertical — narrow passages between very high stone walls. But stepping back a bit we notice that the canyons wind back and forth. Rather than heading straight into the mountains they lazily twist from side to side. It felt like the horizontal “landscape” orientation might better illustrate this.

Narrow Street, Orvieto
“Narrow Street, Orvieto” — A narrow, deserted street in Orvieto, Italy.

The scene could be in almost any of hundreds of Italian towns, from tiny villages to big cities. These old avenues were built before automobiles existed and, apparently, before modern urban grid design separated everything into rigid squares and rectangles. This scene is in Orvieto, and here the street gently winds to the left. Tall buildings and narrow streets make for a lot of shade, something appreciated during hot Italian summers.

Big sections of Orvieto, a hill town close enough to Rome to attract day trippers, include these very old buildings and streets. We loved the town when we visited a couple of summers ago, and we spent a lot of time just wandering and absorbing the ambience of the place.

“Bar Tabacchi, Citta’ di Fiesole” — A the entrance to a small business at a bend in the road in Feisole, Italy.

Fiesole is a small town in the hills above Florence. It is apparently known for its elevated views of Florence and for its Etruscan and Roman amphitheater — which we did not visit. (From all appearances, it is a place for contemporary concerts and festivals.) We went because friends had suggested it, because of the prospects of the view, and because we like to occasionally get out of major cities, especially when we are there for a longer period of time, as was the case in Florence.

So we hopped on a bus near the Florence train station and were soon traveling through parts of Florence that do not look at all like the historic and popular center of the city. Before long the route ascended into the hills, becoming steep in places as we approached Fiesole. We spent a few hours wandering this quiet place and admiring the town and its broad vista over Florence.
