There are many ways to tell the story of a landscape. One approach is to go for the whole thing, the epic landscape, the big view, and to put everything in the frame. This can work, and it may produce impressive and powerful images of great scale. And, to be sure, Death Valley National Park’s landscape lends itself to this with its expansive vistas, immense mountains ranges, and other striking features.

Another way to say something about a landscape is to go in the opposite direction and let small “excerpts” from the larger scene present aspects of it. The more I photograph a place the more I trend in this direction. You’ll still find me looking at those big views, but more and more I look for small bits and pieces. The texture of these rounded ridges is found all over Death Valley and is usually eroded into some combination of gullies and small, smooth hills. Here the warm-colored early morning light is sweeping across these hills, contrasting with the cooler tones of the shadows.

A clump of creosote among curving sand dunes as sunset shadows arrive.

This comes from a short but very intense burst of photography on a late- January evening in Death Valley National Park. A suitable interval before sunset I had headed out on a hike of a bit more than a mile to a line of sand dunes, where I expected that the final direct sun o the day would arrive over the top of a low ridge to my west, and that it would have the potential to bring some lovely, wam light to the dunes. I arrived at the dunes well before sunset and set to work looking for subjects in this somewhat unfamiliar place.

The light was already transitioning toward evening, and as I worked the transition accelerated. I put a long lens on the camera, partly because it would allow me to pick our small compositions in the larger landscape and partly because it would let me quickly respond to short-term bits of beautiful light that were too transitory for me to pick up and move to their location. Moments before the sun dropped beyond that ridge, the color of the light intensified and the shadows lengthened.

A curving sand dune boundary between light and shadow, Death Valley National Park.

This particular curving dune section became the subject for a series of photographs I made on this morning. It is a remarkable form, traveling higher and lower on the dune that what you can see in this photograph — a sort of “s-curve plus.” I have previously shared a couple of other photographs of it that were interpreted in color, photographs that show a larger portion of the dune. This one focuses on a small area near its base.

The light here was fascinating. The dunes are backed by a taller ridge, so the morning light does not arrive here until some time after dawn. At sunrise the light on these dunes is fully shadowed, and it has the blue tones of reflected sky. But as the sun rises it eventually sends its light across that ridge behind the dunes, and streamers of light being to slant across the dunes features, creating quickly evolving patterns of light and shadow.

Desert winds blow sand across the lip of sand dunes in sunset light.

Some things are only at their best for a brief moment. Think of a fresh espresso, a soufflé, or perhaps the half hour of beautiful spring snow between ice and slush. The light in the moment when shadows from distant hills arrive at the edge of sunset light (or its inversion at sunrise) is another such thing. This light does things to the landscape that aren’t seen at any other time of day, but the event may last barely a few minutes.

Near the end of my shoot at this location I turned and saw the colorful, low-angle light coloring the sand and bringing relief to its features. I quickly went to work photographing it, working quickly and instinctively, as I knew that the moment would be brief. In fact, along the left side of this photograph is the the shadow marking the edge of light. A moment after I made this photograph, the light was gone.
