After the Storm — Mt Dana and Mt. Gibbs

“After the Storm: Mt Dana and Mt. Gibbs” — Mounts Dana and Gibbs in sunset light as a summer storm dissipates.

The best light often comes during or after photographically-challenging conditions. This view was no exception. It had rained for half of the day, hard at times, and I had been more or less pinned down, unable to do much photography. I watched and waited, ready to go, but it wasn’t until perhaps an hour before sunset that the rain finally stopped and it began to clear a bit.

I was camped just outside Yosemite’s eastern boundary, near Tioga Pass, so I quickly loaded up and went into the park. As I arrived in the Tuolumne Meadows area the clouds to the west were thinning and late-day light was staring to illuminate peaks, forest, and meadows, while the remaining clouds in the east made for a dramatic sky.

Winter Surf, Clearing Sky

This photograph of winter surf and clearing sky was the culmination of a day-long weather transition. We heard reports of record-high surf along the Pacific coast, so we headed right over to see it. When we arrived, the surf was huge, but it was raining, producing a dark and ominous scene. As the day wore on those clouds began to thin, and before long the sun began to poke through. By the time I made this photograph there was more sun than shadow.

The surf is the main character in this scene. As we watched from the shore, the waves rose to impressive heights in the distance, producing monumental spray as the crashed ashore. But the light was nearly as interesting. This close to the water, the mist-filled atmosphere had a glowing, luminous quality.

Cloud shadows on water as fog dissipates above Point Sur and beaches near the outlet of the Little Sur River

In many locations along the Big Sur coast on this mid-summer morning, the fog was breaking up as I drove south from the Monterey area, heading for the newly reopened section of the Pacific Coast Highway near the small town of Gorda. I stopped as I came to this familiar sight — a place where the road descends and provides a series of evolving views of the beaches near the mouth of the Little Sur River near Point Sur.

As the clouds begin to thin, alternating bands of light and shadow move across the landscape, and from moment to moment this changes to scene. I tried to time this photograph for a moment when key features of the landscape were illuminated — the curving beach, sections of the shallow ocean, and some of the more distant headlands.
