Curving Street, Rain

Part of what I love about Italy is that many cities’ central areas are so old that they were laid out before motor vehicles existed. Consequently streets are quite narrow — in some cases only wide enough for pedestrians. The entrances to homes and businesses are right on the streets — no “front lawn, and no fences. These streets usually don’t follow a geometric grid design, instead radiating from a central square or following the contours of the landscape.

The old, central part of Arezzo, Italy includes areas that follow this formula — though there are also newer streets that are wide enough for some vehicle traffic. We wandered streets like this one on a rainy afternoon, when the showers made the cobblestones glisten.

Souvenir Shoppers, Milan

One of the “problems” with a long trip — at least for this photographer — is that I come back with so many photographs that it takes quite a whileto go through all of them. I made more than 5000 exposures on a 10-week visit to (mostly) Southern Europe last summer. While I’ve viewed all of them at least once, there’s still a lot of work to do when it comes to evaluating and post-processing. That’s my way of saying, “More still to come!”

This was a quick “street photography” shot in the doorway of a small souvenir shop along the square in front of the Milan Duomo. Needless to say, this is a busy area, especially during the summer. There are lots of opportunities to watch and photograph people of all sorts, both tourists and the Milanese.

Orvieto House

This Orvieto house caught my attention during one of our walks around this lovely Italian hill town last summer. The town is on a high tableland surrounded by green hills and valleys. It is bounded by steep inclines, so steep that most visitors take a funicular from the railroad station. Because of the town’s geography, a walk of any distance involves some up and down. Here the road two splits around this house, with one route rising and the other descending.

Orvieto is a day trip from Rome, though we arrived from the opposite direction and stayed for a couple of nights. This meant that we got to enjoy diminished crowds in the evening and morning, and we saw few people on this walk away from the town center toward a spot with a view of the surrounding countryside.

Curving Street, Lisbon

This photograph comes from our longish walk across Lisbon to climb up toward the St. George Castle. If you walk in Lisbon, get used to hills! We walked down a pretty good one from our lodgings, and before long we climbed the large hill topped by the castle. We didn’t go into the castle grounds, since we had some other ideas in mind, so we were soon ascending and descending the steep hills again.

I loved this little narrow street. Just about every thing about it is charming, The route gently curves, and you walk along pavement embedded with interesting patterns and colors. The buildings themselves are painted in striking colors, too. And, of course, it is so narrow that it isn’t really suited to vehicles larger than scooters.
