We visited the Gaudi-designed Sagrada Família in Barcelona last summer. The place was so visually striking that I honestly haven’t quite known what to do with the photographs, but I started digging into them recently. We are familiar with photographs of the remarkable exterior of the structure, but the interior is anrguably even more amazing. The amount of detail is nearly incomprehensible, and it is profoundly affected by the light coming through myriad stained glass windows and moving across its features.

We visited late in the afternoon, shortly before sunset — and I recommend this timing to others who may go. The sun was low in the sky when we entered, and colorful beams of light from the stained glass windows angled across the interior surfaces. Because it was late, the light was not static, instead changing constantly. Shafts of colored light moved slowly across the cathedral, striking various elements such as this column, illuminated by light coming through glue and yellow glass.

On most of my visits to Death Valley there are many days of perfectly clear skies. That might sound great, especially if you are in a rainy or cloudy place. But for most photographers it is far preferable to have something interesting going on in the sky. Give me some thin overcast, cloud streaks before a storm , a snow squall among mountain peaks, or a dramatic thunderhead any time. On this trip I was lucky, getting most of the things in that list, including this sunset cloud formation.

When photographing in Death Valley I often make location decision as much by looking at the weather conditions as by considering subjects. If I have a choice between two subjects and one will likely be in good light, the decision is easy. And sometimes the light itself becomes the subject. That is almost the case here, as the end-of-day light is very muted on the desert mountains, yet just bright and colorful enough to enhance the clouds.

Sand dunes are a source of endless fascination to photographers. They provide a sort of workshop in light, texture, composition, and associations. They can be purely abstract, but their forms can also suggest many other things — human figures, water, mountains, and so much more. When photographing dunes you can play with the relationship between the abstractions and the real, perhaps choosing to incorporate bits of elements — plants, tracks, etc. — blur the line between the abstractions and the real.

Dunes change appearance greatly depending on the time of day and the atmospheric conditions. In some sense, they are a sort of canvas on which light paints. At times the shadows can be deep and even stark, but in soft light they can be almost as light as the highlights. It is hard to say with certainty what color dunes are. In the middle of the day they may seem almost colorless, but when they pick up the colors of sky and golden hour light they may become subtly colorful.

“Sunset Cloud, Desert Mountains” — A solitary cloud floats above the Death Valley landscape and catches the last sunset light.

This cloud was a luminous benediction at the end of a long and varied day that began before dawn along the shoreline of Lake Manly. After a late-morning break for coffee and food, I headed up into the Panamint Mountains to investigate recent snowfall. I timed my departure from there to give me time to get to this spot, an elevated location in Death Valley, in time for sunset.

I have realized that many of the landscape subjects that appeal to me are ephemeral. Like many photographers I am usually out during the edge hours around sunrise and sunset, when the light is the most transitory. I also love interesting and sometimes wild weather conditions — wind, precipitation, fog, isolated clouds forming momentarily above the landscape. This scene had a cloud that was shrinking and changing shape, along with the last bits of colorful sunset light before dusk.
