Churros Time

Churros Time -- table with churros, a cup of chocolate, and coffee cups.
“Churros Time” — Churros, chocolate, and coffee, Madrid Spain.

Yes, this is at Madrid’s Chocolatería San Ginés, one of the better-known (and more touristy) churros shops. Even though it is located down a less-than-obvious side street, the place is often packed. They have come up to the challenge, with a unique (to me, anyway) method of taking orders and allocating tables. The churros and chocolate are the classic combo, with the coffee a nice accompaniment.

I am glad we visited this place, since it is an icon. But it isn’t my most favorite churros experience in Spain. That was in Zaragoza, where we heard that a particular place on an obscure back street is loved by locals. While Americans like us might expect this to be a morning thing, this place only opened at 4:00PM, and the locals were already lined up inside and at the outside walk-up window. And, even better, it seemed that no one spoke English, aside from a helpful customer who was willing to put her limited English to work helping a couple of confused Americans.

This photograph comes from the second of our two recent visits to Manhattan, this one about a week into the month of October. The previous visit was in August. (I can just hear the New Yorkers: “What!! You went to New York City in August? Are you nuts?”) Let’s just say that the weather on the first trip was different than on the second. In October it was quite pleasant, and there was a hint of autumn. Things seemed to be slowing a bit, and the light was different. In fact, in the urban canyons of Manhattan, the later sunrise meant that many places were still in shadow later in the day, including this street corner along the east side of Central Park.

We were staying a few blocks west of Central Park, and on this morning we went out for a walk through the park. I came upon this food cart when we reached the far side of Fifth Avenue. Two things catch my attention about this cart. First, it sure isn’t very busy! Second, because of those shadows the cart’s lights almost make it look like evening. It also occurs to me that something about the colors of light and shadow and the empty streets creates a sort of autumnal feeling.

You might be starting to feel the symptoms of a case of photography whiplash if you’ve been following along recently… as I have alternated photographs from some rather diverse subjects: One day it is a backcountry Sierra Nevada photograph, then next something from New England, and after that another street photograph from Manhattan. By now you know that I don’t constrain myself to one genre or subject, and that has certainly been the case over the past month or two. I will, in fact, continue a bit longer.

This photograph comes from New York City, in case you hadn’t already figured that out. We were there for a few days in August before we headed up to Vermont for a weeklong family event. There’s obviously lots to do in Manhattan and the rest of New York City… but for me that “lots” inevitable includes street photography. The genre can focus on a lot of different things, including the wildly divergent subjects found on urban streets. I may also, as others have noted, provoke you to ask some questions about what you are seeing.

Orange Pepper No. 1

Habanero peppers from the garden, awaiting their fate as pepper jelly.

Not just orange peppers but habanero peppers, one of the hotter varieties. I ended up growing a habanero pepper plant in the vegetable garden this year and the darned this was extremely productive. If you know your peppers, you perhaps understand that you probably don’t need a whole lot of habaneros — a little of its heat goes a long ways. So, finding myself with dozens of them, I made jelly. Batch was so good that I picked the rest of the crop, and most of them will end up in batch .

The path to deciding to photograph them is a bit contorted. A group of friends and photographers get together periodically (these days in the virtual world) to share photographs on some sort of theme. This month’s theme was the color orange. I have a ton of photographs of orange aspen leaves — not surprising for the guy who wrote a book on photographing aspen color! — but that seemed too obvious. So I set out to look for orange things in my neighborhood and home. A few things surprised me. The first was how vague and variable the concept of “orange’ becomes once you pay attention — at the fringes it bleeds across into red, yellow, and/or brown. The second surprise was how few of these orange things spoke to me as photographs. (Some did, and you’ll see more of them soon.) Then, just as I thought I was done.. right in front of me, on the kitchen counter, was this example of orange!
