Je Suis Bleu: Bicycle Man

Je Suis Bleu: Bicycle Man
“Je Suis Bleu: Bicycle Man” — A man rides past a wall covered with street art, Le Marais.

I have been writing a new installment for my “A Photograph Exposed” series, where I write in depth about one of my favorite photographs. The photograph in question, which I regard as one of my best, features a group of three women photographed in front of this street art-covered wall. As part of the writing process, I went back to view other files made at about the same time — for reasons that will make sense when I share the article. In doing so I found other photographs of this scene that I like. In fact, if the “three women” photograph had not turned out, I might well have shared this one years ago!

I am fascinated by the experience of going back to forgotten image files and “discovering” work for the first time. There is a difference in how we see photographs that we have just made (and which we associate with the immediate experience of making them) and how we see the same photographs after time has passed. I think that, in some ways, we see the images more objectively in the latter case — perhaps we can “see” them as what they are more than as what we expected them to be.

A ferris wheel silhouetted against a sky full of puffy clouds, Paris.

Back in 2016 as we strolled through the park next to the Louvre in Paris, this large Ferris wheel beckoned above a pool at the far end. It was a beautiful, wam day, and we weren’t really in any hurry to get anywhere, and the scattered clouds broke up the summer light.

I made several photographs of this feature — the Ferris wheel itself and the pool at its base, with people wading in the water and relaxing around it. For such a striking sort of feature, I find these structures to be difficult to photograph. (The night photographs are often the most effective.) I went with monochrome here to emphasize the silhouette of the steel structure against the cloud-studded sky.

A couple strolls along a narrow Le Marais street, Paris.

This photograph comes from a 2016 visit to Paris… and a few other interesting European places. This narrow street is characteristic of this part of Paris, an area where some of the oldest original buildings and streets are still found.

This is also, in my opinion, one of the more interesting areas to photograph. As is the case with many gentrifying areas in big cities, lots of different populations come together here — tourists, members of more privileged classes, folks who may have lived here before it became trendy, various other folks passing through. The streets and the architecture are also fascinating, from the narrow and car-free lanes to the very old buildings and the interesting examples of street art.

A blue entrance door on a narrow street in Le Marais, Paris

This is another of the “found it while working on something else” photographs from Paris that I’ve unearthed this past week. I’m writing something about another photograph that I made on this day, and when I went back to look at the original of that photograph and others made around the same time… I was pleasantly distracted by going through a bunch of related photographs.

Like those other photographs, this one comes from Le Marais, a beautiful (and today quite popular) older section of Paris that retains very narrow streets and a time worn character, despite being somewhat gentrified now. There’s a lot to see here, and this is even more true when you carry a camera. Among other things, the beautiful soft light on this bit of old architecture attracted me.
