Talus from a glacial moraine reaches the edge of a reflective alpine lake with a shoreline patch of grass

This is (yet another) photograph from my September backcountry sojourn in the John Muir Wilderness, accompanied by a group of four friends and photographers who try to do this every year. We packed in to a lake a few miles from the trailhead, set up camp, and proceeded to work the surrounding landscape for the next week, starting early and finishing late almost every day. In the course of the week we thoroughly explored the surroundings within a few miles radius of our camp.

The far edge of the lake near our camp was completely rocky and almost entirely devoid of flora. (Our side did features a meadow and some stunted trees.) A tremendous talus field, distorted by glacial action, rose straight up from the lake shore to the surrounding ridges. I photographed this material several times during our stay, most often working in the early morning before the direct sunlight arrived. In many of the photographs there is nothing by rocks and water, but in this one I included a bit of the colorful shoreline grass.

Alpine Shoreline, Autumn Plants

For all of the usual reasons, our group base-camped at a high, subalpine lake during our recent week in the Sierra Nevada backcountry. What are those reasons? Some are, of course, scenic — many lakes provide open vistas, reflections, an easy way to walk their perimeters (though not always!), meadows, and access to other nearby locations. “Our” lake had a large and convoluted shoreline. Most of it was covered with trees and mead owing areas, though one side was comprised of the base of a giant talus slope leading down from the nearby peaks.

I walked much of the lake’s perimeter, revisiting sections a number of times during our stay. On this morning I had set out to reach the farthest point of the lake, where a rocky outlet stream led to further meadows and more lakes. I had a lot of ideas about what I could photograph there, but central in my mind was to photograph a couple of bays like this one, surrounded by rocky terrain and early autumn vegetation, and with the distant peaks of the Sierra crest in the background.

Reflecting Pond, Meadow, Thunderheads

Many people probably enjoy the typical Sierra Nevada summer day. Who wouldn’t enjoy perfect blue skies, temperatures perhaps as high as the mid-seventy degree range at 8,000 feet of elevation, gentle breezes? Photographers, that’s who! Actually, we do like the comforts of warmth and sunlight — it is just that the visual environment can be a bit… bland. So, yes, a string of perfect weather days in the Sierra will often get photographers complaining.

The most typical variation in the summer weather pattern comes from monsoon moisture, sweeping up from the south and sometimes parking along the crest of the range and frequently to the east. This weather may (or may not) bring a brief shower (or downpour!), but it always brings interesting skies. This was almost one of the boring, perfect blue sky days but for the beautiful thunderheads on the other side of the Sierra crest. I headed out into this still-green meadow, where the early season flooding had receded, leaving a few pools like this one to reflect the clouds and sky.

Cranes, Fog, Morning Light

I’ve been sitting on this photograph for some time, a photograph from another time when a group of cranes lined up in the thin sunlight on a foggy morning, with empty fields leading into the distance and finally disappearing in the fog.

It is a bit unusual — though not entirely unique — to find a group of this many cranes standing in a row like this. Often they are in the distance, in smaller groups, airborne, or standing in strange positions and arrangements. Although the lighting is unusual, it is part of what attracted me to this scene.
