Two Cranes in Synchronized Flight

Sandhill cranes always excite me. Aside from backyard birds like robins, they are the first birds that intrigued me — years ago when I read about them in Leopold’s “A Sand County Almanac” for a college class. Although I had not ever seen the birds, Leopold’s description stuck with me, and years later I was thrilled to learn that they are abundant in parts of California. I had not realized this, and it was an accidentally “discovery” made back when I started to photograph migratory geese.

Given that geese first brought me to the places where the cranes are found, the differences between the habits of these kinds of birds caught my attention. Geese often assemble noisily in flocks containing thousands of birds, but most cranes stick to somewhat smaller groups. (Though there are exceptions.) While geese flocks often take to the air in huge numbers, most of the time I see cranes in groups of a few dozen or less. Their pattern of flight usually (though, again, there are exceptions) features slower wing motion and often extensive periods of gliding. I photographed this pair flying above me in the very early morning light.

Breaking Wave, Reflected Sun

Between Christmas and New Year’s Day, California had several days of extraordinarily high surf, produced by storms far out in the Pacific Ocean. Media reports consistently warned citizens to “stay away from coastal areas.” Consequently, many of us high-tailed it straight to the nearest coastal areas to watch the show! (In all seriousness, this kind of surf really is dangerous. If you go, please observe from a very safe distance.) We visited the section between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay, and the surf was as big as I’ve ever seen it.

It was cloudy most of the time, but occasionally the sun managed to break through a bit, creating beautiful reflections on the waves and the distant ocean. This photograph is one of a series I made from a high (and safe) observation point on a peninsula that juts out into the ocean. From here I could watch the waveS break and continue on toward the shore to my left.

Arch, High Line Park

An arch structure at the High Line Park, Manhattan.

I didn’t even pause long enough to find out what this structure was. I was attracted to its form and its appearance in a space full of other linear forms, and by the low-angle and rather stark late-day light coming from the right. I suspect that it is some sort of commercial construction, but who knows? From appearances, it could be a monolith in the vein of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” though I doubt that this one was left by aliens.

The location is in Manhattan, along a section of the High Line elevated park that passes under the Standard Hotel just before the park terminates at the new Whitney Museum. This was at the end of our rather long walk that began all the way up at the west side of Central Park, during which I photographed everything from street scenes to architecture, trees to… this thing.

Sandhill Cranes, Morning Light

It was a relatively slow day of bird photography on my first foray to the Central Valley of the season. Not that this was a surprise — it was still early for the arrival of the big flocks of geese that I look forward to a bit later in the season. So sandhill cranes were my primary subject s— flying overhead or standing in shallow ponds like this one.

While the scene lookS tranquil, I knew that it would not last. Typically, at some point around sunrise or just a bit later, the cranes lift off from the ponds where they spend the night. This does not happen all at once, as it often does with geese. Instead, small groups suddenly take to the air, sometimes leaving their compatriots behind. I stopped to photograph this group because of the reflection, but also because I knew that they would soon fly out.
