An early-spring mountain snow storm clears from desert mountains, Death Valley National Park.

This photograph comes from a morning in Death Valley when the light, for the most part, was singularly uninspiring. I knew it would be cloudy from the weather forecast, and when I went out before dawn there was just enough light to confirm this. But it was the last morning in the valley, and I was determined to at least see if anything would crop up. I loaded up and walked into sand dunes… where the light remained resolutely gray, the skies overcast, and it even rained a bit. But sometimes a break in awful light can produce glorious light…

… which is precisely what happened for a few moments as the light from the rising sun found some holes in the clouds and illuminated the summit of desert mountains, where the remnants of a passing storm were still dropping snow and rain. It was a reminder that going out on the unlikely days can sometimes produce something wonderful!

Dunes, Blowing Dust

photo of dust storm on sand dunes in Death Valley
“Dunes, Blowing Dust” — A late-afternoon spring dust storm sweeps across sand dunes, Death Valley National Park.

This was a wild scene. By late afternoon it was clear that high winds and blowing dust were on their way. We hunkered down for a while and ate an early dinner while waiting to see what would develop. The winds continued to build and the sand and dust were heading more and more in our direction. These conditions are both compelling and extremely uncomfortable, but my desire to photograph overcame my common sense and I headed out.

Since the winds were blowing from to my left and a bit behind me, I decided to head to an elevated spot where I would at least not be directly in the cloud of blowing sand. From this location I could look down and across the dunes and the clouds of sand sweeping across them. The wind was still a problem — a big problem actually. It was blowing so hard that even my relatively stout tripod was useless, so I leaned against a fixed object, raised the shutter speed, turned on image-stabilization and hoped for the best. It was literally impossible to hold the camera steady, so I resorted to timing my exposures for brief moments when things at least slowed down a little bit.

Butte, Morning Haze

A desert butte and mountains stretching into the distance in morning haze, Death Valley National Park.

With all that haze, this may not be your typical Death Valley photograph, but it is my favorite kind of light. I love haze, backlight, and scenes full of interesting shapes, curves, and lines. I’m also fond of including elements that are barely visible, as is the case with the furthest hills beyond the rounded butte.

The photograph is an example of the “don’t forget to look behind you” school of photography. We naturally focus on the main subject in front of us, the one that brought us to a place. But frequently something else is lurking nearby, often to one side or behind us. That was the case here, as this scene was almost 180 degrees opposite the very different subject that I had been photographing before I turned around to see this view.

Orchard, Morning Fog

Morning fog begins to form about a Central Valley orchard.

While I think this may be just about the last photograph to emerge from this season’s trips to photograph migratory birds, there’s always a chance that I’ll return to the file archive and find another. During this early March trip to California’s Central Valley the birds were more widely dispersed than usual, and I found myself looking for other subjects late in the morning. That took me to nearby agricultural country and the Valley’s immense orchards.

I saw this orchard in the distance as I drove down a (sort of) main road, so I found a turn-off onto a beaten-up old side road that took me that direction. A fog bank was developing as I approached, and it dramatically darkened the sky beyond the trees full of white blossoms.
