Sunset light floods a west-facing bowl above a high Yosemite backcouintry lake.

In the recent series of panoramic photographs from the Yosemite backcountry and a follow-up photograph in a more typical orientation, I mentioned this location and its extraordinary exposure to the western sky. Among backcountry locations with which I’m familiar, this one is perhaps the most reliable at producing beautiful sunset light and alpenglow.

For this photograph I decided to simply compose straight on, looking right at the upper (and east) side of the bowl. Even though peak sunset color has not yet quite arrived, the entire cliff face is washed with this warmly-colorful light.

Rock Islands, Alpine Lake

Boulders form small islands near the shoreline of a Sierra Nevada alpine lake.

I made this photograph on a beautiful evening in a favorite Yosemite backcountry location featuring a small string of three sub-alpine lakes. The lowest is surrounded by forest, but this upper lake sits in a wide-open bowl at timberline and facing the western sky. This makes it a place of astonishingly colorful evening and sunset light when the conditions align.

As is my usual pattern, I had camped at the lower lake before wandering to the upper lake late in the day, planning to photograph along the shoreline. In fact I had in mind a particular treat that I wanted as my subject. After making a few pictures of it I headed out around the lake, where I made this photograph of “boulder islands” along the shoreline just as golden hour was beginning.

Carson Peak, Grant Lake

Misty Carson Peak catches the light in the distance beyond the low water of Grant Lake.

This photograph comes from an early June visit to the east side of the Sierra Nevada a few years ago. The trip began with a quick pass through Yosemite Valley, where I photographed late dogwood blossoms and other flowers before heading over the crest on Tioga Pass Road for a few days of photography on the other side of the range. On an early trip like this I tend to hit some of the favorites first and then branch out to new locations. This spot is one of those familiar favorites.

As you have probably noticed, the low water in the foreground is a big hint that Grant Lake is there for water management, and that it is not a natural lake. A dark ridge looms beyond the upper end of the lake, framing the familiar view of Carson Peak. It was an afternoon and evening of clouds and some precipitation near the crest, and as the late light hits this peak some remnants of the moisture soften its contours.

Trees and Cliffs, Morning Fog

Morning fog drifts among cliff-dwelling Monterey cypress trees above the Pacific Ocean.

This camera position offered an unusual perspective on the landscape and the atmosphere. When photographing on the West Coast, I often stand on the land and look west (or a bit north or south of west) and toward the ocean — in other words, “looking out to sea” when viewing the water. But in this location the land curves sharply to the west and the views point to the north, and in places like this one I can look back toward the land to my east, viewing surf against the cliffs and early morning light coming toward the camera.

This was a beautifully foggy morning. A popular misconception about California’s coast is that it is a place of endless warm sunshine. Those conditions do happen, especially in the late summer and very early autumn (hint!) — but quite often the coast is foggy and cool or even cold. While some distance inland the temperatures reached well into the ninety degree range, here I photographed drifting fog in morning light as the temperatures hovered in the mid-fifties.
