Coffee Building

Coffee Building
“Coffee Building” — An old, dilapidated building near the Borough Market, London.

Our London lodgings in June were near the end of Blackfriars Bridge, not far from the Tate Modern Museum, the New Globe Theatre, and plenty of other interesting stuff. We were perhaps a ten minute walk from Borough Market, another favorite of ours. So one morning we headed that way for morning coffee and a bit of photography — there’s a lot of interesting stuff to see in and around the Market. As we turned up a narrow street near our destination I saw this fascinating, dilapidated store front.

I was surprised that this quiet street was lined with closed businesses, considering its proximity to some pretty vibrant areas. I’m fascinated by buildings like this one, with their layers of structure and surfaces, some very old, some added over time, and others the result of decay — and I think of them as “street landscapes.” In case you wondered, following that arrow to find coffee would only lead to disappointment.

Mercado de Triana

Mercada de Triana
“Mercado de Triana” — A sale at a stall in the Mercada de Triana, Sevilla.

Keeping with our pattern of visiting Sevilla locations that we could walk to, on this morning we headed across the canal (“Canal de Alfonso XIII”) on a convenient bridge, leaving behind the old town near the cathedral and entering a not-quite-so-old town across the water. There was much to see here, too, including guests arriving for a fancy wedding at a church, lots of locals out for a morning walk, shops and stores geared bit less to the tourist trade, and the Mercado De Triana.

There are, of course, LOTS of markets in European cities. Their size and focus varies. Some are gigantic and attract large crowds of visitors, perhaps less for the available produce and more for the prepared food options and souvenirs. This little market is closer to the traditional market end of the spectrum. For the most part the stalls are unassuming and seem to feature actual produce, meats, seafood, and so on. (There is one spot that offers cooking lessons that seems more tourist-oriented.) We stopped in for coffee and breakfast, then strolled the market, watching the morning activities.

Market, Arezzo

As I have mentioned in posts accompanying previous photographs from this town, Arezzo is one of the “off the beaten tracks” Italian towns we visited during summer 2023. I don’t mean to say that it is an uninteresting or unimportant place — just that it isn’t a typical tourist destination. That was clear during our visit, when we often felt like we might be the only tourists in a restaurant or other venue.

The photograph features a look through the doorway of a small store where locals shop. The cases feature a remarkable assortments of cheeses, beans, pastas, wine, and more. On our walks through this town we were more likely to encounter such places or other local businesses and less likely to see the usual tourist shops.

A rack of belts at a street market in Florence, Italy.

I photographed this rack of (presumably knockoff) belts in all colors and textures along a bustling and crowded street market outside of the Mercato Centrale building in Florence. Given the heavy tourist traffic in this city, it is no surprise that this market is extensive and crowded. Eventually I will likely share photographs that show more of the market, unlike this one which is just about the colors and shapes of the products on this rack.

These markets are in pretty much every European city that we have visited — from Italy to Kosovo — and especially in those oriented to tourist traffic. I have mixed feelings about them. On one hand, they seem to employ a lot of folks, and if you are careful you can probably get some stuff for very low prices. On the other hand, there’s a lot of items of questionable vintage, and if you think you are getting something of great value, well, just be careful!
