This year we only had a few hours to visit the Carrizo Plain, where wildflowers emerge for a few weeks in astonishing abundance during wet springs. We extended our Death Valley trip by a day so that we could loop though the National Monument on the way home. Road conditions delayed our arrival a bit, and rain showers were passing through when we got there, but as it cleared we could see extensive fields of flowers extending across the valley and rising into the hills.

There’s a special significance to the hills in this photograph. This is the escarpment of the great San Andreas fault, which runs thought this part of the state like a giant scar. The terrain is rough and displaced by the lateral movement of eons of earthquakes… and softened here by a garland of yellow flowers.

Sometimes (oh, heck, often) photographs come about in somewhat unsuspected ways, and this is such a photograph. In October we were in Southern Utah and we had previously spent a day photographing in Zion Canyon. The general plan on this day was to photograph along Mt. Carmel Highway in the morning (which we did), grab some coffee and food beyond the park, and then, well, we weren’t quite sure. The day evolved organically and we ended up on some interesting Utah backroads crossing some surprisingly snowy highland before we eventually ended up in Cedar City. We gassed up the vehicle and realized that we had time for a quick side trip into Kolob Canyon on our way back toward our eventual destination.

I’ve been in the less-visited and less-developed section of Zion National Park several times. In addition to being a jumping off point for lots of interesting trails, it presents some landscapes opportunities that are quite different from those of the more familiar Zion Canyon. I’ve usually been there earlier in the day, so it was fascinating to observe the place in late-day light. Much of this landscape is huge, even “epic” in scale, but as I scanned it I started to see smaller vignettes that seemed interesting. In particular, I noticed that this shadow was moving from left to right and gradually lighting the prominent tree in the center of the scene, casting its shadow on the brightly-lit sandstone behind it.

A spring storm moves across the summit of the Cottonwood Mountains, Death Valley National Park

I have long been intrigued by the rising layers of ridges in the Cottonwood Mountains of Death Valley National Park. Not only do they rise dramatically from the floor of the valley, but the view of more distant peaks evokes for me thoughts and memories of more remote places in the park, ranging from well-known locations like the Racetrack Playa to less known canyons and washes. Below the range is an enormous mass of alluvial material washed down from these mountains, and the base of the range is breached by many canyons. It can be challenging to photograph since it is some distance from easy overlooks, making haze an issue, and for other reasons.

This was a day of “interesting” and diverse weather. It began with the arrival of a weather front, scattered high mountain snow flurries that eventually became steady snow in our location, soft light as the snow diminished but clouds remained, and the gradual clearing with scattered weather cells passing by. As we descended from shooting in the Panamint Mountains—where is was largely clear by this time—we looked across the wide valley at the base of the Cottonwood Mountains to see that dramatic clouds filled the sky above the range as snow and rain showers pass across its peaks and valleys.
