I have more than one reason for sharing this photograph. First of all, I like the photo! I think it captures the focus, intensity, and joy of the chorus members as they raise their hands and sing this gospel number at a rehearsal for this week’s holiday concert.

And the second reason? To let my San Francisco Bay Area friends know about this wonderful joint holiday concert by the San Jose Chamber Orchestra and The Choral Project, an annual tradition that brings together both groups, wonderful soloists, and a diverse range of music, old and new and from all over the planet. This is another photograph from my ongoing project photographing musicians and elements of the world they live and work in that might not be seen so frequently by the general public. For the most part, this project has me photographing people, but I am also interested in the objects in the environment of the performing arts musicians, which include things such as their instruments, the back-stage environment, theater lighting, vignettes of moments when they are not performing, and so on.

At times I have very close access to the stage during rehearsals (and during rehearsal breaks) and before and after concerts. I was able to make this and some similar photographs during one of the times when I could move around the perimeter of the stage and look across it and the objects filling it towards the lights of the “house” – the main audience area of the theater.

I only spent a short time on one evening walking along the High Line Park, but I certainly found it to be an intriguing place, and one that I intend to visit again. I first stopped to photograph this spot when I saw a couple of musicians performing on the bench just beyond the people walking and standing in the foreground. But the “urban landscape” of buildings beyond is obviously very striking, especially in the evening light. I cannot identify all of the buildings in the photograph – my first attempts to find them via Google maps failed because the buildings are so new that you only see empty space and construction sites there. I finally determined that the building on the left with the “swooping” lines is the IAC Building, designed by Frank Gehry – which is obvious in retrospect. The taller building in the background (which I had taken to calling the “Mondrian building”) is the “100 11th” building, designed by a French architect named Nouvel.
