River Walk

This scene caught my attention as we crossed the bridge on Michigan Ave, heading toward Chicago’s “Magnificent Mile.” Here the river bends slightly before heading deeper into downtown Chicago near “The Loop.” Nearby tall buildings reflected the morning sun into the scenery from different directions. It was early enough that only a small number of people were out walking along the river.

Until this morning we had spent most of our visit inside The Loop, located south of the Chicago River. Now we joined the throngs of people (not visible in the photo, obviously) heading south on Michigan Avenue to the “Magnificent Mile,” where a nighttime holiday parade would take place later on.

Christmas in Riquewihr

Just about a year ago, in November and December of 2024, we spent six weeks getting into the holiday spirit in Europe, spending time in Germany, France and Spain. The photograph comes from the Alsace village of Riquewihr, where we spent a few days in a part of France that was new to us. Not surprisingly, the place was all tricked out for Christmas.

One reason to visit Alsace on this trip was that we drove down with relatives from Germany — this region and Germany are close geographically and culturally. (As I understand it, the local dialect is deeply influenced by German.) It was a charming region, at least in the less-busy winter season. It is filled with small villages, separated by vineyards in many places, and it has a wonderful local cuisine.

Manhattan skyline reflected in the Lake on a hazy November day, Central Park.

We went for a walk in Central Park on the first morning of our November visit to Manhattan. We planned to meet up with family later in the day, but we had free time and the park was only a couple of blocks away. Our New-York-resident (grown) “kids” have occasionally wondered why in the world we always visit the city in the dead of (freezing) winter or the (wilting heat and humidity of) summer — they have suggested a spring or fall visit. And they were right. The weather was pleasant and the fall colors were spectacular.

The body of water is “The Lake” — perhaps not the most creative name, but a lovely place just the same. It is surrounded by paths beneath hardwood trees, and those trees were in full autumn color. I made the photograph from a small bridge, placing a few of the towers of Manhattan between the trees so that they would reflect in the surface of the water.

“In 1991, ten pioneering Bay Area photographers displayed their work as “The Nocturnes” in a curated show on night photography. Twenty years later, The Nocturnes are still having “full moon gatherings”, educating new photographers, and enjoying the camaraderie of like-minded artists that realize that some of the best photos are taken after the sun sets. This curated exhibit is a retrospective on the work of some of the most well-known night photographers as well as those just getting started.” (From the event web site.)

I’m pleased to say that two of my prints will be included in this show.
