We spent a couple of days in the quaint English town (center) of Shrewsbury this past June. After close to three weeks of exploring Scotland and Ireland followed by a weeklong walk in the Cotswolds, we had several weeks left to visit various English towns and cities. Shrewsbury sounded like a slightly lower key stop compared to our previous stay in Bath.

The Panteão Nacional is one of several sites along this ridge above the Alfama district of Lisbon. It and the others command a sweeping view of the city and the water, but they also form focal points for views of the area from elsewhere in the city. I photographed this view from the Portas do Sol viewpoint area.
As striking as the building and its dome are, the Alfama itself is really the show here, in my view. The colorful buildings with their red roofs are packed tightly together along narrow and curving streets.

This view is from the area around the Imperial Castle of Nürnberg, a prominent high point in central Nürnberg. Much of the terrain here seems flat, but from this high point one has longer views beyond the central old city area. The towers on the left belong to the historic Seboldskirche, but in the distance you can make out some much more modern structures.
,We had been at the famous Christmas market in the central square when we saw a street leading up toward the castle. We were actually unaware of the castle until we arrived there, so it was a fun surprise. (We like to not know too much when traveling, which lets us enjoy more discoveries on our own.) From here we wandered back down into town and ended up on side of the streets that are visible in the photograph.

Last fall we were in New York for family visits and to see a performance at the Metropolitan Opera. It was a lovely autumn day in Manhattan so we went for a long walk. We typically stay at a place a bit to the west of the Park, and our mornings often include walks there in one form or another. This time we headed further north from our usual routes and ended up walking around this manmade lake.
When I think of Central Park, this reservoir isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. To me it is more about lawns and trees and curving pathways, people enjoying what counts as the “natural world” in this city, and a steady stream of walkers, cyclists, runners, and more. But it seems to get less crowded up here by the lake, and views open up, unobstructed by trees.
