Flock of Gulls

A huge flock of gulls takes to the air at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery, California.

While photographing the elephant seals last weekend at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery just south of the Big Sur coastline of central California, an absolutely flock of shore birds took flight above the beach. I quickly lifted the camera up from the elephant seals and photographed into the cloud of birds as it rose and turned above the beach. While other photographs in the series show an even greater density of birds, this one shows some of the individuals – at least in the larger versions on my computer screen.

Two Elephant Seals Sparring

Two young elephant seals sparring at the elephant seal rookery at Piedras Blancas, California.

From what I read, these are young “sub-adult” males who “spar” during the early summer period. The real battles are apparently waged by the adult males during the birthing and breeding period. I’m no expert on elephant seal behavior, but while these “sub-adult” sparring matches seem fairly benign, I’ve seen what appeared to be rather vicious battles between older, scarred males. These two fellows had at it for a few moments, belly bumping, intertwining their heads, and generally play fighting – while the other seals nearby seemed to not pay any attention at all.

Elephant Seal

An elephant seal on a sunny afternoon on the beach at the Piedras Blanca Elephant Seal rookery along the Central California coast.

Early in the extended Fourth of July weekend we travelled down the Big Sur coastline (sorry, only a few photos of that) and stopped at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal rookery on the shoreline in the general vicinity of Hearst Castle. The rookery is quite amazing. Literally within yards of the highway a large group of elephant seals come ashore to do their “elephant seal thing,” and you can view them from a short distance away. (They come ashore in many other places in California but few are this accessible and many are almost completely inaccessible.) During our brief stop I had a great opportunity to put the long lens to use. This seal was, like many of the others, seemingly enjoying a nap on the warm sand in the afternoon sun.

Rocky Inlet and Surf

Surf washes through a rocky inlet at Point Lobos State Reserve, California.

Yes, yet another photograph from the Day of No Tourists at Point Lobos in late April – when almost no one was there due to the closure of Highway One for the Big Sur Marathon. This little inlet/cove is not far from where I photographed the harbor seal family. I’m pretty certain I’ve visited this exact feature before, but this is the first time I’ve tried to photograph it. (I have photographed some very nearby features – they are actually visible from the same camera position.) The light was very flat – it was overcast and gray from fog – and the colors of these particular rocks did not look like they would work well in a color image, so I decided to go with black and white here. The use of a rather dark neutral density filter – that’s what allowed the long exposure – also alters to color balance in some odd ways. I made several exposures of this spot since it is virtually impossible to predict just how a long exposure of water will turn out.
