Late spring morning on the Big Sur Coast near Bixby Bridge. I had just enough time to drive down to this point and back on a weekend morning when the sun was breaking through the coastal fog earlier than usual.

I’ve lived in California almost my entire life. I frequently head down to and beyond Monterey and Carmel to photograph the upper portion of the Big Sur Coastline. But I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that I’ve never driven the entire Big Sur coast, much less photographed it. I was finally able to rectify that situation last week. In early March I headed out to the California coast between San Francisco and Santa Cruz for an afternoon of random coastal shooting – I was probably thinking seascape, hoping for some interesting fog and clouds, but I stumbled across a large group of wind surfers just north of the coastal town of Davenport.

This simple minimalist landscape juxtaposes the horizontal form of coastal fields and meadows with interesting cloud formations in the wake of a late-winter storm along the California coast.

The location is just outside of the small coastal town of Davenport, just north of Santa Cruz on the coast between San Francisco and Monterey – an area that combines coastal scenery with farmland.
