Luminous autumn atmosphere above California mountains and lake.

While this may not seem like a typical “fall photograph,” that is how I’m describing it here. Allow me to explain. For decades I have been intrigued by autumn light — perhaps even longer than I’ve been attentive to fall foliage colors. Many years ago I recognized that there was something different about it, though I could not quite put my finger on it. Although I still don’t claim to fully understand it, something (or some things) change in the the autumn atmosphere in my part of the world — something about the luminous quality of the slightly hazy atmosphere, likely complemented by the lower angle of the sun creates an unmistakable effect.

On the day I made this photograph I had arrived before dawn in California’s Great Central Valley to visit some favorite locations and subjects. It was early (perhaps too early) in the season for them, so after enjoying a morning there I eventually decided to head home early, not sticking around until sunset. As a result I passed this location in the early afternoon instead of in the dark… and I could not resist stopping to make a few photographs.

Today I’ll take a brief intermission between the ongoing stream of the photographs from Utah that I have been finding in the raw file archive… and take a brief side trip back to the Yosemite National Park high country, a place that I’m missing right now. I could get up there — and I hope to in the next month or two — but the logistics are quite complicated at the moment.

This photograph comes from a day of weather a bit like what we’re experiencing in Northern California today — humid, thunderstorm weather. I made the photograph late in the day as the last light glowed pink on dissipating clouds above a ridge with stubborn old trees living on a very rocky ridge.

Valley and Ridge, Evening

Early evening light on forest covered valley leading to rocky ridge, Yosemite National Park.

Earlier this month I spent a few days in the Tuolumne Meadows high country of Yosemite National Park, generally along the Tioga Pass Road and with hiking excursions outwards from there. My main goal on this trip was actually the hiking, but there was time for photography, too, of course! On this evening I went up to the meadows near the pass just inside the park boundaries and took some time to wander and make photographs.

Here I was attracted by the massive peak, with its reddish rock indicative of old materials that lay above the granite foundation of the range, along with the evening light and the overlapping shapes of lower, forest covered hills and the dark row of trees just beyond the meadow. In addition, I’ve hiked out into that area many times, and this view evokes memories of many of those adventures.

Lake and Mountains, Morning

Morning mists and light above a subalpine lake, Yosemite National Park.

There is no hiding the fact that this is a popular and sometimes crowded location in Yosemite National Park’s high country. Since this lake is along the Tioga Pass Road route though the park between Tuolumne Meadows (and interesting points farther east) and Yosemite Valley (and most of California!), on busy August days it can be almost oppressively crowded. However, even then, if you go at the right times you can avoid most of the crowds and busy-ness,” and there’s a special bonus: the most beautiful times of the day are often the least crowded!

I’m usually out and about before dawn since I don’t want to miss the beautiful early light or the peace and quiet of the early hours. I had already been up and photographing for some time when I stopped on my way back toward camp to make this photograph. But even as I was wrapping up my morning’s work, most of the people who would show up here later were still sleeping in, having a big breakfast, or perhaps still driving from distant locations. Consequently, I experienced this lovely morning light and atmosphere in near solitude and peaceful quiet.
