I’ve been out to the San Joaquin Valley quite a few times over the past few months, beginning in the last months of 2014, when there were not yet too many birds there, and as recently as a couple of weeks ago, when large numbers of geese and cranes had returned. (This was a bit of a relief, since many wondered where the birds had gone, especially after this string of drought years in California.)

Our visit to the valley on New Year’s Day was especially nice. Not only did a small group of us literally greet the dawn of the new year in the company of thousands of birds, but we were pleased to see the numbers of the birds had begun to increase again. Among them were the Ross’s geese, who appeared in rather large numbers. While the morning fog was still in the air, though thinning enough to let faint sun through, large groups of them had settled in on the pasture land. The birds were constantly coming and going, as new groups arrived and others left, and as they moved one spot to others nearby, often for reasons that I could not discern. In this photograph the large group still on the ground was in the process of leaving, with a new group taking to the sky every few moments.

Quintet of Cranes

Many years ago in college I read a book that mentioned the sandhill cranes and which spoke of them almost reverentially. At that time I was largely uninterested in things like birds (with the possible exception of egrets) and even less interested in flatland things — my interests were in the mountains and the higher the better. But somehow the existence of these birds stuck in my mind, even though I really had no idea what they were. Then, not all that many years ago, when chance led me to go see the migratory birds of California’s Central Valley, it was the cranes that were my object — a friend had told me about a crane refuge, and that was the sum total of my knowledge of the birds, so that’s where I went. The cranes were, in a sense, my gateway drug to developing a serious interest in all of the birds that show up in California in the winter.

In the last few years I have photographed the birds extensively, and I’m becoming more fond of the cranes with their unusual and striking call (often heard while the birds are unseen), their low and level flight, propelled by slowing flapping wings, the striking difference between their beautifully graceful forms in flight and their rather ungainly appearance on the ground. This winter there have been a larger number of cranes at the location where I often photograph, and on this visit the numbers were quite impressive. As I came around the far end of the place, there were several small groups of them right on the gravel road I was traveling on. I slowed, got my camera ready, and knew that they would soon take off, probably providing an opportunity to photograph them in flight. They did fly, but not far, and I stopped and photographed this group against the green of the pasture, and the slightly fog muted light on the trees of this flat landscape.

Autumn Morning, Round Valley

Morning light on the pastureland and trees of Round Valley and the eastern Sierra Nevada

This lovely pastoral location sits at the base of the eastern Sierra, and is as much a part of the Owens Valley as it is a part of the Sierra. It is green and lush in the spring and early summer, it takes on some of the typical California golden color later on, and its brown grasses and colorful leaves produce a beautiful sight in autumn. It is not at all a “destination,” but it is a place that I always look forward to seeing when I pass up and down the east side of the range.

There are two particularly beautiful lighting conditions that occur here. One, which I’ll share in another photograph a bit later, occurs in the afternoon. The sun drops behind a tall ridge along the upper section of the valley, leaving the steep slopes of the eastern Sierra escarpment in shade while brilliantly lighting the autumn-colored cottonwood trees from behind. The other lighting, which is seen in this photograph, comes in the morning, when low angle light crosses the meadow, creating long shadows and gradually lighting up the backdrop of the Sierra.

Ranch, Fence, Morning Mist

Morning mist rises above Long Valley ranch land

This is a favorite photography area for me. It isn’t far from the crowded eastern Sierra ski and resort town of Mammoth Lakes by the map, but it every other way it is pretty much a completely different world. In the fall, when conditions are right and mists rise out in these flatlands, I like to leave the Sierra behind and drive out here and explore.

The Long Valley area is the caldera of an ancient volcano, which erupted quite violently many hundreds of thousands of years ago, and which has been active at times since then. Today the visual evidence remains in the form of the large caldera itself (which becomes quite obvious after you look for it) and the many hot springs and even a hot creek out in the valley. On cold mornings fogs form out here, and mist and steam rise from the many sources of hot water. This was one of those foggy mornings, and looking over this ranch and directly into the sun, I saw a beautiful series of receding layers: foreground pasture and several steaming waterways, a fence, more fog beyond, more mist, and then a series of higher and higher hills and mountains.
