Lake Manly Shoreline
“Lake Manly Shoreline” — From the shoreline of Lake Manly to distant desert mountains under morning clouds.

A spectacular cloud deck floated above Death Valley on this winter morning. While the clouds were a bit too thick to let brilliant sunrise colors develop, they created a very dramatic sky and its reflection on the surface of Lake Manly. The photograph looks north across the lake from its salty southern shoreline.

In other photographs of this subject I have tried to to fill the frame with sky and reflecting water. In this case I decided to include some of the salt-crusted shoreline of the lake in the foreground, and I used a wide angle lens in order to include more of the scene, and especially the sky.

Displacement
“Displacement” — Cracked and broken dry desert mud, Death Valley.

Those who photograph in the desert inevitably end up photographing… mud. I was attracted to many things in this little scene. The fractal patterns themselves, are always fascinating. (Finding just the right patterns is more difficult than it should be!) In this case I also liked the disruption of the expected pattern by the displacement of material from one of the dried cakes of mud. It appears that something has broken the top layer, left shards to the right, and interrupted the overall coloration of the little scene.

I cannot quite say why it is that photographers are so interested in desert mud — but we definitely are. There is something about the patterns themselves, but also the way light plays across these textures. I recall one time walking down an Utah canyon with a half dozen photographer friends. We encountered a little patch of nearly dry mud, and our progress immediately halted as all of us unloaded packs, set up tripods, and went to work for the next half hour… photographing mud.

“Telescope Peak, Lake Manly” — Panamint Range and Telescope Peak reflected in Lake Manly, Death Valley.

This photograph incorporates at least two elements that might surprise people unfamiliar with Death Valley National Park — a large lake and snow-dusted mountain peaks. Telescope Peak, the highest point on the Panamint Range summit ridge, rises just above 11,000′, putting its summit in the alpine zone. It is normal to see snow there during the winter months.

Lake Manly, the body of water reflecting the mountains, is a different matter. Its appearance is somewhat rare, occurring only in years of exceptional rainfall. Although this is now a dry winter in California, a big storm a year ago primed the pump, a monumental November storm re-formed the lake, and there was another storm around Christmas Eve Day. The broad but shallow lake forms on the playa of Badwater Basin, the lowest point in the continental United States.

Death Valley, Mountains, Morning Haze
“Death Valley, Mountains, Morning Haze” — Morning haze over Death VAlley and desert mountains..

This view is from the Panamint Mountains of Death Valley. We were fortunate that it was accessible at all. The initial access road reopened days before our arrival after being closed for most of the year… and a storm closed it again on the day we left the park. The dark foreground mountain is part of the range from which I made the photograph. In the middle ground we see the still-shadowed floor of the valley with the Amargosa River passing through salt flats. Beyond that are several more desert mountain ranges disappearing into distant haze.

Some of the most spectacular sites in Death Valley National Park lie far from the familiar tourist hot spots. Reaching them may require hiking or long droves on rough desert roads. (This is a very big park!) And seeing these places at the best time often means traveling to them in predawn darkness or returning late at night. To arrive at this location we started driving a couple of hours before sunrise, and the last part of the drive was on a narrow gravel road.
