At Arthur’s Seat

At Arthur's Seat
“At Arthur’s Seat” — Hikers rest and enjoy the view at Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh, Scotland.

I did not plan to find myself on this summit in Edinburgh. Arthur’s Seat is a landmark here, the summit of a volcanic ridge that rises above the lowlands of the city. It has historical significance — perhaps you can imagine why? — and it is also in the middle of a very large park close to central Edinburgh. I made this photograph at the summit, and you can see that the climb was far from a solitary experience! More about the hike? Read on…

Someone Patty knows heard we were in Edinburgh, knew that we had just hiked the Great Glen Way, and assumed correctly that we were willing to do some walking. He suggested this “little hike,” and his description led us to expect a little nature hike. As we walked from our hotel not far from Edinburgh Castle and spotted a very tall and steep wall to our right we began to wonder what we were getting into! We joined a crowd of people on the hike — many hundreds for sure — as we slowly ascended this stiff climb. If we had known, we might not have done it, but once you get partway up such a thing it is hard to turn back,!

Fog at the historic Battery Spencer, Marin Headlands

There are old forts and batteries all over the West Coast and especially around the San Francisco Bay Area. Many of them have long histories, though we tend to associate them with World War II, the most recent time when the country through they might be put to use. I know of a number of these sites, but I’m most familiar with those in the Marin Headlands, across the Golden Gate to the north of San Francisco. If you have visited a particular and iconic overlook of the famous bridge you have likely been near to this place.

It is one thing to visit these spots on a sunny day when they are overrun with visitors. But if you go early on a cold and foggy morning you may bet a better sense of what it might have been like to be stationed at one of these sites. When I visited on this fogged-in morning, I was attracted by the relationships and angles of the railings.

Cloud Shadows and Fog

A cloud shadow on the surface of the Pacific Ocean off of Point Reyes National Seashore.

This is a rather subtle landscape or seascape photograph, perhaps to the point of minimalism. I made it on a foggy afternoon along the interior of Drakes Bay at the Point Reyes National Seashore. The fog had thinned a bit by this time, but it was obstinate enough that it had not lifted even in the afternoon. Some light was coming though the cloud deck but it was extremely diffused — though it had enough directionality and the fog enough luminosity to lay a subtle shadow across the water below a thicker line of clouds.

Days like this one are slow, quiet, and mysterious along the Pacific Coast. The scale of the landscape diminishes to some extend and the “clear to the horizon” views are gone, as is the dome of the sky. From high locations such as the one from which I made the photograph, even the sound of the surf is muted.

We are perhaps spoiled somewhat here in my part of California. We take redwood forests for granted — both the coastal trees and the sequoias found in a few areas of the Sierra. Because I’ve been around these trees almost all my life, I forget sometimes how remarkable they are. Ironically, it is frequently while traveling to other places where forest trees are not of such gigantic size that I realize how shocking their scale can be.

At the same time, familiarly helps me look past the trees themselves and see smaller things that might be overlooked by a person walking through these forests with neck craned upwards in marvel. There is actually a lot taking place right down on the ground, especially during the wet season. I made this photograph one march in redwoods just north of San Francisco.
