Perhaps this scene looks a bit familiar? It is the same subject as in another black and white photograph that I shared recently, though this time composed a bit differently to fit the portrait orientation and include the curving alkali flats in the foreground. I often photograph such a subject in more than one way. At a minimum I’ll try to find a portrait and a landscape mode version of the scene if possible. In the landscape version of this scene I omitted most of the lighter foreground material, but by using portrait mode here I was able to use the leading curve in the foreground.

These old alkali formations among the dunes fascinate me. So far I have not found too much information about them, though it seems that they are layers of material that must have been created from silt that was once liquid and which dried and cracked. In places the formations are thick and quite solid, but in others they are incredibly thin and fragile. (I may walk on the thicker formations occasionally, but I always try to detour around the thinner ones so as to avoid damaging them.) Unlike other playa surfaces, these are often also shaped by the forces of wind-blown sand.

Remnants of street posters, Paris.

One thing I look for when photographing in cities is examples of street art and posters and similar that have been up long enough to have been weathered and otherwise distressed. In some cases they reveal many layers of imagery and text — some painted, some in ink, and some pasted to walls and on top of previous materials.

Beyond being in Paris I no longer recall the specific location or larger context for this splash of color. I just recall that the bright colors, abstracted from their original context by being torn to pieces, caught my attention as we walked by, and that the background white field almost reminded me of paper product wrapping. There’s just enough form to the colors that I might imagine that I could figure out what was there originally…

We arrived in New York late the day before, in time to check in to lodgings and meet our “kids” (two sons and their fiances) for dinner, but there wasn’t a lot of time to get around and see and photograph. The next morning we met up with our youngest son in the more or less the Williamsburg area, and we wandered about, hitting the waterfront of the East River and then finding lunch.

During any bit of urban wandering I’m almost always on the lookout for photographs. Photographing on the street is an exercise in working quickly and being versatile. In most cases I don’t have a specific subject in mind — the closest to that may be a general idea of looking a buildings or people or water or interiors or… In this case I was in an area with a lot of older construction, and we passed through a few spots that were obviously the hope to lots of posters and graffiti. Oddly, since people are sometimes trying to paint out the tagging, there can be many layers of often new paint, posters in various states of decay, and odds and ends of painted words and images. Here the remnants of a poster partially obscured a hand drawn heart on a wall that appeared to have been painted in two not quite identical shades of blue-green.
