A dust storm begins to envelope desert mountains, Death Valley National Park.

Last year we spent nearly a week in Death Valley in the Spring, photographing landscape and plants and flowers. I go every year, usually camping, but this time we stayed in one of the lodging facilities in the park, heading out from there on various one-day adventures. (I like camping in the park… but I don’t mind sleeping in a bed and eating good food either…)

We experienced some fairly big dust storms during this visit — not the biggest I’ve seen by far, but powerful enough to make an impression. One was building on this afternoon, so we headed in that direction to see what photographic opportunities might arise. Near the end of the day the sky was almost apocalyptic, with clouds above, raging dust storm below, and sunset color. But this photograph comes from earlier in the day when the effect was more subtle. We stopped close to these rounded desert hills and photographed the landscape as the more distant mountains gradually were obscured by the increasing dust.

Sand dunes and shadows from early morning sun.

Sand dunes are the photographer’s playground, with a seemingly infinite range of shapes and lines and ever-changing light. They can be photographed on any scale, from the largest landscape down to tiny elements like flowers or the tracks of animals. No matter how often you have visited a particular set of dunes — and I’ve been to these scores of times — there is always something new to see.

Because of the relatively early hour of the day, when shadows are everywhere but changing quickly, it is likely that I made this photograph quickly. During the first and last few minutes of the day, the light changes so quickly that one often must work fast and complete a photograph before the light changes and the shadows move.

Much of Death Valley consists of landscape laid bare, with the earth itself exposed in ways that aren’t seen in other landscapes where forests and meadows dominate. Even the places where sagebrush and similar desert plants grow are only thinly covered, and other than a short period each year these plants have the same colors as the earth.

At first this can seem, well, barren. But after you make a few adjustments this sort of landscape presents remarkable opportunities. Of course, this landscape turns out to be less barren than you first thought. Perhaps a single bush can be more remarkable when it stands alone. But even more important, the quality and color of light become more evident as it works its magic on this ostensibly barren place.

This photograph comes from nearly one year ago on the 2019 edition of my annual early spring visits to Death Valley National Park. (There will be no spring visit this year, what with shelter-in-place orders and so forth — fortunately I was there in January.) The late March and early April time frame is often ideal for wildflowers and for splitting the difference between winter cold and the unbearable heat that arrives in spring. Is there a downside? Yes. Lots of other people seem to have the same idea, and the number increases every year.

The sand dunes are an unending source of photographic opportunities. I prefer to photograph them either very early in the morning or during the sunset to early dusk time periods, when the light goes through remarkable transitions. My favorites include the subtly colored dusk hours and the moments of first/last direct sun, when the light is warmly colored and there are transitory shadows. I usually steer clear of the most popular ares of the dunes, generally finding more interesting things out along their boundaries.
