The last hours and then moments of the day in a place like this are often magical. There’s frequently a sort of emotional crescendo as the day ends, followed by a quiet coda after the sun set. As evening approaches it is time to make decisions about where to be for the quickly moving events just before and after sunset — when the light changes quickly and the birds are often in motion. Once the golden hour light begins the scene becomes dynamic, with light passing though phases from late day, to golden hour, to post sunset, to twilight, and each has its photographic potential. This is often a period of an hour or more of fairly intense photography.

Then one realizes that the light has truly faded and that night is coming on. There is a release of tension, almost a letting go of the breath, and I become away of the fading light and the quiet. Often there are a few moments when I put the camera down and just stand quietly, taking it in. I made this photograph at the end of a New Year’s Day a couple of years ago, as clouds passed over the wetland ponds and beneath the deepening blue of the twilight sky.

Autumn is my favorite California season. (My least favorite? Summer.) This transitional period begins here with a feeling that is mostly indistinguishable from summer, except that there is a sense of change in the air. By the end of autumn the conditions change to the point that it really feels mostly like winter, with cold — for California — conditions, Pacific weather fronts passing by, and snow in the mountains.

This is also the season when my attention turns away from the more typical summer subjects of the high Sierra and toward other California subjects: the coast (with its rising autumn and winter surf), the great valleys, and the foothills. On this late autumn morning I was out in the valleys before dawn, and the clouds from an incoming weather system streaked the colorful sky.

Birds fly in a cloud-filled winter sky.

This seems to be largely a photograph of sky, but if you look a bit closer you’ll see lines of birds spread across its width. It is a winter sky, looking west very late in the day, just after the sun has set, and the birds are departing in that direction. Surprisingly, the largest group of them are white pelicans, birds that I usually don’t encounter in quite such large numbers. There are a few sandhill cranes mixed in here and there.

As with some much “nature” photography (here I’m also thinking of landscape subjects) a lot happens very quickly at the margins between day and night, the time when arguably the most interesting light is available. Closer to the middle of the day things tend to change more slowly and there may be more time to contemplate. But during that time between not-enough-light-for-photography and middle-of-the-day stability, the conditions are in constant flux, and it is “now or never” for many photographs. In this image an additional dynamic element was added as I timed the exposure to place the birds beneath the curving shapes of the clouds.

I never know exactly what I’ll find when I show up to photograph birds. It might be foggy or the sky might be clear from horizon to horizon. There might be thousands of geese… or none at all. (And when there are none… they might show up later in the day.) The rising sun may produce brilliant colors, or it may be muted by low clouds.

If I recall correctly, we had hoped for fog on this morning — New Year’s Day — but instead found fairly clear weather. There was some thin fog hanging around, but it had more of the quality of a sort of atmospheric haze than of regular fog. And above this haze the clear sky was visible and changing colors in the first light. High above the geese were already active, and long chains of them flew high above us.
