Cathedral Dome, Dubrovnik

Cathedral Dome, Dubrovnik
“Cathedral Dome, Dubrovnik” — The dome of the Dubrovnik Cathedral, as seen from Gundulic Square.

We spent a few days in Dubrovnik, Croatia near the end of the summer of 2023, between time in Kosovo and a week near Trogir, further north in Croatia. The weather conditions were fascinating and a little challenging on this day. There were high clouds, some of which were thick enough to darken the sky, and the direct sun was blocked, leaving this soft light on the buildings.

I made the photograph in a small square that is largely hemmed in by buildings like those in the photograph. The only part of the cathedral that is visible beyond them is is rounded dome, a major landmark in Dubrovnik.

Bubble Dancing

Bubble Dancing
“Bubble Dancing” — Children dance and spread soap bubbles at the Praça do Comércio, Lisbon.

On our May visit to Lisbon (and a few other places) one of our first outings was to simply walk down the street to the Praça do Comércio square on the waterfront. It is a pretty obvious tourist thing to do, but it was the morning after a late arrival following about 20 hours of travel… so we were not up for anything too stressful.

Someone had a big bucket of soap and was making bubbles on the square, and a group of exuberant children was running and dancing around them, unconcerned about what anyone else might think.

Interior, Sebalduskirche, Nürnberg

Interior, Sebalduskirche, Nürnberg
“Interior, Sebalduskirche, Nürnberg” — Interior of the Sebalduskirche (St. Sebald’s Church) in Nürnberg, Bavaria.

On the last full day of our 2024 autumn visit to Nürnberg we visited some of the older historic sites. A couple of the old churches were on our list — first the St. Lorenz church and then the Sebalduskirche. This photograph is of the interior of the latter. Of the two, this one seemed darker and a bit more foreboding, though the change in the ambient outdoor light may have enhanced this impression.

This is a very old medieval church — construction began 800 years ago. Like so many buildings in this part of Nürnberg, the structure was seriously damaged during WWII. Since then it was restored, and today there is little obvious evidence of the destruction.

This photograph intends to combine views of the grand and the intimate scale of the Louvre, Paris. We spent about a week there in the summer of 2016 — one stop on a five-week trip that took us to New York City, London, Paris, Heidelberg, and areas of Italy including Chianti, Florence, Siena, and Bologna. (For those who wonder, no, this was not an organized tour. We were mostly on our own, though we met up with family members at various points.)

In Paris we spent a lot of time just wandering (and eating, but that’s another story), but we also made a point of visiting a few iconic locations. We had a day at the Louvre, which anyone who has been there knows is not remotely enough time to “see the place.” We managed on wing of one floor of one building, plus some shorter visits to a few other areas. I made this photograph when we stopped for a bite to eat and sat outside above the courtyard. This spot allowed me to photograph very close to a few of the statues that line the ledge along the upper floors facing the inner courtyard.
