Dark Passage With Scooter
“Dark Passage With Scooter” — A scooter parked in a dark passageway with a door to a garden, Orvieto.

This little photograph from Orvieto, Italy captures a common sight here and in other parts of Europe — a passageway extending from the street toward a private, enclosed area, which may often contain a garden. These views are always intriguing, suggesting a world beyond the street that is private and not open to passers-by.

They are not always impossible to visit. In Sevilla, Spain we stayed in a small hotel that very definitely embodied the Moorish influence that is so prevalent there. The facility enclosed such a central courtyard, with a fountain, plants, and tables and chairs — a private place that seems pleasantly isolated from the nearby streets.

The White Stone
“The White Stone” — A white stone rests among many-colored pebbles, Point Lobos.

I had a free morning in mid-April, so I headed over to Point Lobos, barely more than an hour’s drive from here. I might have gone on down the Big Sur coast, but road washouts have closed that route for now. So Point Lobos it was! I arrived to gray weather — high fog and not much in the way of interesting, directional light. But eventually the clouds began to pull back toward the coast and soft, directional light appeared.

Point Lobos always rewards a slower pace. There’s a lot to see here, and even more to see if you linger and start to notice things that you might miss by passing through quickly. The edges of this cove are lined with rocky strata that gradually dip into the water. Winter surf pushes all sorts of interesting stuff up onto the shoreline, and I enjoy walking slowly here and seeing what I can find. The small colorful pebbles are everywhere, but the larger white rock was the special find.

Deserted Street, Orvieto
“Deserted Street, Orvieto” — A narrow, deserted street in the Italian hill town of Orvieto.

It can be a challenge to photograph these narrow streets without people in a popular town such as Orvieto. One strategy is to photograph late in the day and even into the evening, but sometimes an even more promising approach is to go out very early. Most of the tourists aren’t out then, instead sleeping in before a leisurely breakfast in the morning or sitting in a restaurant in the evening. The difference is even greater in Orvieto, where many of the visitors only come for the day, heading back to their “home base” for the evening.

All of the streets here are narrow, but this is an even narrower side street. Unlike the familiar American grid street layout, there the narrow passageways curve and twist and take off in surprising directions. Several things in this photograph intrigue me. First, essentially everything you see is stone masonry, from the cobbled path to the walls and arches. Second, I suspect that these arches serve multiple purposes — both as passageways and to brace the facing buildings.

Eroded Layers
“Eroded Layers” — Erosion exposes layers in rocks, Pacific Coast, Point Lobos.

These rock formations have fascinated me since I saw them many decades ago as a child. My parents used to take us on family outings to Point Lobos, and very early on I began to photograph the place. (I am pretty sure that I went there on an elementary school field trip, a memory brought back to me on this visit when I saw a busload of kids eating lunch at picnic tables.) This little intimate landscape includes forms which seem to suggest the sea itself — I can see waves and inlets and more in it.

This particular spot at the reserve has a variety of interesting features. Stratified rock layers descend to the water of a cove, and they are twisted all sorts of interesting ways as the work of the water exposes them. There are colorful bands and intrusions. Sometimes the layers are turned on their sides. And, as here, the action of waves gradually peels back the layers, leaving abstract forms. (Hint: If you look closely you might spot a tiny tide pool and a few of its small inhabitants.)
