Recently I spent a few days in the Eastern Sierra, mainly to readapt to altitude before a potential backcountry trip. The plan was to car camp in some Forest Service campgrounds, take a few high-elevation hikes while laden with a full load of camera equipment, and to make some photographs. This photograph comes from a location that I’ve known for years, near the base of one of the trans-Sierra passes along the east side of the range. Late in the day I had noticed the interesting haze and remembered some meadows and stream side country a few miles away. So I headed that way just. before the sun dropped behind the Sierra crest and photographed straight into the late-day light.

Since I haven’t written about any recent Sierra trips lately, I’ll use this post as an excuse to share some observations about conditions. And, of course, this year “conditions” is hard to separate from the effects of heat and drought. On the positive side, some of the high country locations I visited were not (yet) as dry as I had feared. I saw green meadows, wildflowers, corn lily fields in full bloom, and some water. On the other hand, it is only the middle of July — the moisture levels looked more like what I’d expect to see in August. Aside from the early season wildfires and the smoke they spread, one of the most worrisome signs was in the foothills on the west side, where it looks like huge numbers of oak trees are turning brown and dying.

Sometimes I manage to tweak some people a bit by saying, “All photographs lie.” I probably should explain. Too often there is an assumption that photographs are about showing the objective qualities of subjects, and that the best photographs simply convey the reality of these things. I think that is mistaken, and that photographs are literally incapable of being objective analogs of their subjects. Almost everything about a photograph is subjective. How did we choose to frame it? What did we choose to leave out? What time of day did we make it? What lens did we choose? Did we choose color or black and white? If there is a “truth” in a photograph it is the truth about the photographer’s subjective response to the subject. (This is a partial explanation of why two photographers who photograph the same subject usually end up with quite different photographs.)

Beyond that, there are many aspects of a subject that a photograph simply cannot contain. The sound of little mountain streams is central to my experience of places like this, but it is not found in a photograph. A photograph cannot capture the breeze or the slight chill of the shade in high mountains. The knowledge of what lies between this small stream and the lake at the base of those peaks isn’t found here. How I came to find myself at this place is not known to the viewer. Where is this place, and does that even matter?

This little canyon winds away from a backroad gravel route though a section of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. (I hope it still does — for all I know it is part of the beautiful land removed from the monument in 2016. Sigh.) A group of use spent a good part of a day wandering into the canyon and photographing.

This little scene has most of the features that characterize these canyons, though none of them seem as intense as the most extreme examples. The shallow stream winds quietly through the canyon bottom, though it is also clear that this little steam can sometimes rise up and make the place impassible. There is no direct light anywhere — instead everything is lit by diffused and reflected light that filters down from far above. The view is quite limited, and as you pass through a place like this your would is constricted by the side walls and the bends above and below your position. Looking ahead to the bend in front of us, we can see a bit of light around the corner, inviting us to continue around “just one more bend.”

In my previous post I mentioned something about the experience of wandering down canyons such as this one, in particular the seductive nature of the continuous pattern of “next bend,” straight section, and the next “next bend” — and the difficulty of resisting the lure of exploring just one more twist of the canyon. On this. day I ran into that temptation as your pre-set turn-around time arrived… and passed… and we continued through a couple more of these bends.

This was one of the earlier bends, a point where we came back down to the stream after passing over some higher ground in a straight section. Here we had to wade to cross the stream since the route now followed the opposite bank. After crossing I climbed up a bit to place this colorful cottonwood tree in a composition that included the canyon beyond, and as I photographed a string of horses forded the stream.
