Chicago bridge tender “house” or tower, West Chicago Street Bridge.

I had notice one or two of these buildings previously, but had not thought too much about them. The most recent time I thought about them was in relationship to a photograph of another downtown Chicago subject that included the tops of a couple of these buildings, and I was trying to figure out what the call them in the photograph data. On that photograph, since the building wasn’t really a primary subject, I eventually probably just called it “building” or perhaps nothing at all.

However, this photograph features one of these structures as it predominant feature. On the river tour we saw a lot of them, and I eventually figured out the obvious — that they had something to do with the operation of the bridges. As I worked on this photograph I finally looked them up and discovered that they are called bridge tender towers or bridge tender houses. They apparently were the control points for the mechanisms of the bridges, Which can be raised to allow taller boats to pass through. I thought this one was especially remarkable and unusual. Many of the others seem to be made entirely of stone and often in what I would characterize as an art deco style. This one seems like some odd hybrid of medieval jail/tower and ships cabin, and the blue color is very striking, too.

The Brooklyn end of the Manhattan Bridge above the East River and the old Domino Sugar plant

I photographed this from the water taxi — not always an easy trick, and often resulting in a lot of skewed horizons! For those who wonder, it is possible to make sharp, handheld photographs from the deck of a bouncing water taxi… if your are careful, do lots of safety shots, have good light, and keep the ISO up. The real tricks are to put yourself in the right places on the boat, where you’ll have a good view of your subject and won’t be blocked by others, and then to be able to very quickly spot and respond to momentary juxtapositions of elements.

I knew I wanted to photograph the Manhattan Bridge as we went underneath it, so I had already found myself a place from which to get a good line of sight. The initial idea was to show the mass of this bridge as it stretches out over the water, but I quickly saw that the iconic (and abandoned) Domino Sugar plant was making an appearance beyond the bridge, so I watched for this conjunction of the two features.

A metal gate blocks the entrance to a pier along San Francisco Bay

This is another in the recent series of photographs made along the San Francisco waterfront, walking along various less-visited areas and occasionally poking my head into places that are more industrial than tourism oriented. I’d have to review more closely to remember for certain, but I believe this one was in the China Basin waterfront area.

As I walked slowly along this section of the waterfront I paused frequently to photograph buildings and other features of the area. This is an area in transition, and taken as a whole this part of the waterfront ranges from old and dilapidated, through working piers, and right on up to remodeled and updated areas reoriented towards business or tourism. By comparison to some of the older working piers, this one seems awfully neat and clean, with the exception of some fabric pushed up against the wall at the far left. The stark lines and stark morning light, open to the vast sky above the bay caught my attention.

Escalator and stairs at a San Francisco BART station

These BART entrance stations are well-known to San Francisco Bay Area residents. (As are the many stories about them: the wisdom—or not—of outdoor escalators, the necessity of, uh, cleaning them frequently, and more.) They tend to feature a combination of escalators for those going up and stairs for those descending.

I think that they sometimes create a visual center of interest in the cluttered environment of the downtown city. They are ringed by a low metal fence, and this one at least is designed in an attractive curve. (Some other photographs of mine work with that subject.) Looking down from the railings of this fence and tightening the crop enough, I could create a composition of shapes and colors that excluded just about everything but the large vertical shapes broken up by the smaller horizontal shapes, and the contrasting blue and yellow tones. A person begins to enter the frame at the lower right.
