This is perhaps a bit of a whimsical photograph. As we walked through an older section of Paris back in 2016 we started coming upon lots of these posters. I assume that the event must have happened recently, as the flyers were worn but not so worn out that they couldn’t be read or seen.

I’m a sucker for worn and weathered surfaces, especially when they hold interesting shapes and forms and when there are layers of old “stuff” on the walls. If you look more closely at this you many find bits of old posters on top of bits of even older flyers.

This is another photograph from our 2016 European trip, on which we spent about a week in Paris. It was, I’m almost embarrassed to admit, our very first visit to the city. (It is a long story. But at least we did finally go. And we’ll go back again!) We loved everything about our stay there. When we travel to such places we spend a lot of time walking — to and from locations we want to visit, wandering around once we get there, and exploring neighborhoods near our accommodations or which happen to catch our attention.

I made this photograph “in the neighborhood” near our hotel in Montmartre. My recollection is that we had headed out looking for a place to eat dinner — something of a daily adventure — and were walking around during the sunset and evening hours. This is a great time for street photography, since the lights of businesses have come on, yet the ambient light from fading daylight is still bright enough to illuminate the scene.

I made this photograph on, literally, our first night in France ever. (Yes, we are late-bloomers when it comes to international travel. That’s a long story involving finances, bringing up a family, strong interest in visiting other places, and more.) We had been in London for over a week — not our first visit there — and had arrived in Paris by train in the afternoon, finding out way to our hotel in Montmartre, unpacking, and then deciding it was time to head out and explore. (Here I could tell another funny story on us, involving our discovery that you can get an espresso just about anywhere in this part of Paris, but I’ll save that one for another time, too.)

When we went out we had several goals. One was testing our ability to navigate in a city whose language we do not speak. (It was fine.) Another was to start to get a fix on the surrounding neighborhood. A third, and may be most important, was to find something to eat! That’s hardly a problem in Montmartre, though deciding which place to patronize was challenging. At the intersection where I made this photograph we finally picked one and enjoyed a simple meal outdoors. Whether this is visible in this small online photograph or not is a question, but there are some interesting interactions going on among the people in this nighttime sidewalk scene.

People walk across a large expanse of concrete reflecting blue sky

It has been a couple of years since I made this photograph, so I may have forgotten portions of the story about its creation. We had been in London for several days (perhaps a week?) and were, as I recall, on our last day before heading on to our next destination. We had some free time, so we headed to the Tate Modern, not really knowing specifically what was showing. We arrived to find that there was a gigantic exhibit of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings. We are O’Keeffe fans and we’ve seen a lot of her work, so we were surprised to find such an extensive showing of this American artist… in London. Unfortunately, we had not left enough time to fully appreciate the show, not realizing how big it was, and we ended up hurrying through.

At some point – perhaps while waiting to enter the O’Keeffe show? — we had some free time so we headed to a snack bar, and nearby there was an overlook of the area in front of the museum. Most people probably enjoy the view across the River Thames here (and we did, too) but I was interested in what was happening in the large open area directly below. It was in shade, so the illumination was from the giant blue light panel of the sky. Some very small leaves had fallen and they produced a fine galaxy-like pattern on the surface. People stood about or walked past. I waited for them to arrive in interesting conjunctions and made a few photographs.
