Narrow Street, Orvieto

Narrow Street, Orvieto
“Narrow Street, Orvieto” — A narrow, deserted street in Orvieto, Italy.

The scene could be in almost any of hundreds of Italian towns, from tiny villages to big cities. These old avenues were built before automobiles existed and, apparently, before modern urban grid design separated everything into rigid squares and rectangles. This scene is in Orvieto, and here the street gently winds to the left. Tall buildings and narrow streets make for a lot of shade, something appreciated during hot Italian summers.

Big sections of Orvieto, a hill town close enough to Rome to attract day trippers, include these very old buildings and streets. We loved the town when we visited a couple of summers ago, and we spent a lot of time just wandering and absorbing the ambience of the place.

Tall Autumn Aspens

Tall Autumn Aspens
“Tall Autumn Aspens” — A tall grove of aspens with bright autumn colors, Eastern Sierra Nevada.

This grove showed an interesting pattern — most of the color in the frame comes from short trees along the edge of a clearing, while the white trunks of older and taller trees extend on up toward the top of the frame. Straight trees like these are the exception in much of the Sierra, and we often see shorter aspen trees that are twisted and bent. I suspect that the extra light from the nearby clearing is one reason that these trees grew taller.

Once again, this is a photograph made in the soft light. I came into this canyon late in the afternoon, and soon the shadows from very tall ridges in the west moved across the landscape. The soft light allows the details in darker areas to emerge a bit, and that nearby clearing diffused a bit more reflected light into the scene.

Doorway, Arezzo, Italy

Doorway, Arezzo, Italy
“Doorway, Arezzo, Italy” — Doorway and wall on a side street in Arezzo, Italy.

We came to this scene during a long exploratory walk. Our lodgings were in the lower part of old Arezzo, and as we walked into the old business area the streets began to ascend. There were people about, but it was nothing like the crowds in tourist centers like Florence, from which we had just arrived. Eventually we arrived at Arezzo’s Grand Piazza, but we kept going, right up to the old wall at the crest of the hill. We followed this to the left, stopping to enter an old church. As we came out I saw this little scene, which seems so characteristically Italian.

The building was on a small square near the entrance to the church. It had the features that are common here, including the stonework and the stucco walls, in one of the typical colors in these towns. (They tend toward earth tones of one sort or another.) As uncrowded as the lower town had been, here at the upper end we were almost alone.

Fountain, Florence

Fountain, Florence
“Fountain, Florence” — A streetcorner fountain in late afternoon sun, Florence, Italy.

I made this photograph on one of our more-or-less random walks. This time we crossed over the river and headed in the direction of the Pitti Palace. After visiting that site we continued wandering in the nearby neighborhoods, stopping for a drink in the Piazza Santo Spirito before resuming our walk.

It was getting late in the day, and we were generally working our way back toward the river and then toward our lodgings and dinner. But walking slowly we had time to look around and notice details. This elaborate fountain was on a street corner, and I photographed it as an early evening beam of light illuminated it.
