One a weeklong visit to this area a couple of years ago, I eventually started to locate particular nearby locations that I returned to almost daily, visiting at all times of the day and getting to know them well. We camped above a quiet lake, and below its lower end there were long meadows extending toward the deep valley beyond. Despite the lateness of the season (it had been a very wet year!) the meadows were still green and even wet in places, and there were wildflowers everywhere. In this little spot the view opened through gaps in the surrounding forest to reveal views of distant peaks.

It might seem odd to make a photograph of… onion plants. But if you have spent much time in the Sierra backcountry you may have developed an affinity for this plant. The wild onion generally grows in wet places, and when the conditions are right the plants are almost lush. The beautiful purple flowers are striking. And the fragrance of these plants, often combined with damp and cooler air where they grow, produces a pleasant sensory memory that I associate with these places and with backpacking.

I am certainly far from being an expert on wildflowers. As those who know me are aware, when it comes to recalling the names of plants (flowers, bushes, trees) the identities simply don’t “stick” for me — they never have, and it hasn’t gotten better. I know a few by name, but most I know only by appearance, location, and season. This flower was a new one to me, and I had to look it up after returning home.

I found these triteleia flowers in a small canyon at Pinnacles National Park. They, and many other seasonal wildflowers, were growing along a shaded section of canyon wall as I passed by on a walk to a more distant place… so I paused and spent and hour or so photographing them.

Sunlight on a flower-filled spring meadow with storm clouds in the distance.

This spring I was fortunate to be able to chase the spring wildflower bloom over a period of more than two months. (And I’m not done yet!) I visited this location twice, once near the end of March and again a few weeks later in early April when this wet-year bloom was more or less reaching its peak in this area. In some ways the springtime transformation in California areas like this one is doubly impressive, as these places are generally brown (or as we say, “golden”) during the majority of the year.

On the day of this visit there were scattered springtime rain squalls moving across the landscape. One moment it was sunny, and the next moment the sky was darkened by clouds and rain fell. Distant landscapes combined the patterns of shadows and the light. I had just made my camp in the hills and was descending back to the valley to chase the wildflowers when I stopped briefly to photograph this sunlit meadow backed by the dark skies of one of the passing showers.

Spring grass and wildflowers on the California Coast along the Pacific Coast Highway below Carmel.

Just another spring day along the Big Sur coast. Really. I had the morning free so I headed down the coast, getting as far as the upper Big Sur coast, where spring was coming on strong. The hillsides were green (they will be brown soon enough!) and there were wildflowers everywhere.

This cove is a familiar one, located in the upper section of this part of the coastline, below Carmel and above the settlement of Big Sur. It is often a lovely spot, with the cove on one side and a point extending into the ocean on the other, and with rugged rocks and sea stacks everywhere. On this morning I looked at this scene across the headland, covered with spring greenery and yellow flowers.
