As a photograph, I do not claim this as one of my best. However, it is one that I like a lot. Along a small street in Heidelberg, between a larger street and a long hill with a famous walking path, there is a home with windows at street level. I understand that neighbors may know it, among other things, as home where flowers are often seen in the windows. In the evening, if the inside lights are on, a favorite photograph of mine may be visible on the way – a little bit of my Sierra Nevada world shared with people in a distant place.

Yes, I still have more photographs from this past summer’s visits to New York, London, and several European locations — lots more! After London and Paris we headed to Germany, and returned to Heidelberg, which almost seems like a home base for us. Patty’s brother and his wife live there, and in the middle of five weeks of travel it was wonderful to spend time in their Heidelberg home.

This time we hopped on a boat and travelled up the river a ways to a more distant suburb (?) of Heidelberg, where things feel a bit more rustic, at least to this first-time visitor to that particular spot. When we got there we spent some time simply wandering around, walking up narrow and hilly streets. I spotted this window in a weathered wall along the shaded side of one of the buildings we passed — so on this one week anniversary of the American election you get a heart in a window.

Repairing a Shop Window

At closing time, a man works to repair a shop window.

On a summer walk through sections of downtown San Francisco, beginning in the late afternoon and continuing after dark, I passed a street-corner shop that was just about to close. These shops, being in an area where such things are necessary, is blocked off at night by metal shutters. An employee was standing in a display window, repairing the shutters.

The man, focused on his work and seemingly unaware that he was now the featured “product” in this display window, was my initial subject. But I quickly saw other things in this scene. On the right side of the frame the wild explosion of colorful merchandise, lights, and reflections of the street behind me is almost impossible to figure out. On the left side there seems to be no reflection and the colors are more subdued, with the open shutters placing a horizontal grid over the dark figure of the store employee. Horizontals on the left; verticals on the right; complexity everywhere.

Reflections and shaded interior beyond a barred window, San Francisco

Walking along the waterfront near the South Beach Harbor I noticed a walkway going out to the end of a pier than I had not noticed before. This time a gate was open, so I walked out onto the pier and passed many small temporary (or so they seemed) businesses and shops that were set up behind the sliding metal doors, now open for the day. My goal was the end of the pier, where I figured I might be a good, clear view straight into the morning light coming across the bay or possibly back across the boats tied up in the harbor.

Passing one small metal-sided building, I noticed the odd combination of objects — a bird cage behind a sort of “human cage” of the barred windows. The right window provided a visual and subjective contrast with these objects, since it reflected the open blue sky and the upper portions of the masts of the nearby sailboats.
