This is another photograph that isn’t quite totally new. Some years ago I made several exposures of this little scene, with the two trees with fall color backed by the rocky cliff face. (To be sure, this was not the only time I photographed these trees — this is a favorite spot of mine in the right conditions.) But This one is just a bit different than the earlier one — a very slightly different position, I think, and a different crop, plus some refinement of how I approached the post processing.

I sort of wonder if it may be too early to start sharing fall color photographs. Ah, heck, no! Never too early for that! In fact, my mind is typically on at least three seasons at a time anyway. First, the season that just passed and from which I still have raw files to process. Second the current season because, well, that’s obvious, right? Third, one season beyond the current one — because I always have slightly longer term plans running in the back of my mind.

This is probably not quite what comes to mind when you hear the words “Silicon Valley.” Although the photograph does indeed come from that place, the location is in a somewhat run-down area occupied by small light industrial tenants. This particular one has mystified me more than once — as far as I can tell the only signage is the two words painted on the wall, and I never seen anyone there. (I’m tempted here to make some pun about letting the chips fall where they may, but I won’t. Sort of.)

Aside from that mysterious sign, I like the simple geometry and the bright color of the building. (It has been sitting on my desktop for a while now, along with several other urban photographs that also feature a particular color.) In fact, I think it may be possible to view this simply as a sort of a color and form abstraction.

Early winter wetland reeds transition from green to yellow to brown.

These reed thickets grow in all sorts of wetland areas in my “neck of the woods” — in and around ponds, along creeks, and so forth — forming a sort of living landscape that changes continuously throughout the year from season to season. I photographed these during the first week of winter, when they were well other along in the transition to their dormant season but still with some green plants among them.

The reeds are a habitat for all kinds of wetland creatures, perhaps because they provide some shelter and protection from predators. When I think of these places, my main association has to do with the little redwing and tricolor blackbirds that are often found among them. At times flocks of them collect on the highest branches, producing a wild cacophony of bird song, and then retreat into the thicket when anyone or anything threatening approaches..

A cluster of Eastern Sierra Nevada aspen leaves in full autumn color.

Here it is — finally — what I expect to be my final photograph from this year’s autumn aspen color in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Like many of the others, I made this photograph while wandering about in a little grove that happened to be showing exceptional color this year. To some extent that color was because my timing was just about right, but it also seemed like a more colorful year than usual, with more of the red and orange leaves that I usually see.

When I’m in the field I often line up a sequence of potential photographic opportunities to explore as the light evolves. I might start with a subject that will work in pre-dawn light, then move to one that focuses on the first light of sunrise, and then be ready to photograph things that work in the light that arrives a bit later. That’s what happened with these leaves. The light on a major landscape subject that I was photographing had mostly run its course a half hour or so after sunrise, so I moved to this grove which was still in the shadow of a nearby hill. That light was perfect for making close up photographs of leaves, since the soft light reveals details in everything from shadows to highlights.
