Although this photograph is from eight years ago, I recall this morning as if it were last week. One day during my annual spring sojourn in Death Valley I decided to get up early and drive out of the park to the east, passing though the triangle of the park that extends into Nevada to get to one of the many ghost town sites in this region. The place gets a fair number of visitors — to the extent that it has more recently been fenced off to protect it — but on this morning I was just about the only person there.

Although I was there mainly to photograph the decaying structures, the remnants of this town sit on the edge of a vast expanse of open desert landscape. This view looks across the wide Amargosa River Valley toward the Amargosa Range that runs along a good part of the eastern boundary of the park. The light was stunning just after sunrise, and thin clouds were visible for a while until stronger light made them less visible as the sun rose higher.

Thinking that I would like to explore some new areas, in late September I headed out to Great Basin National Park along the eastern border of Nevada, just a few miles from Utah. I picked this time to go since I knew that Utah aspen color can peak than that in California — late September rather than early October — and I figured that the same calendar might work in Nevada. I made the long (12 hour!) drive from the San Francisco Bay Area to Baker, Nevada in a day, and the next morning I set out to enjoy a rare thing — the first experience in a new (to me) national park. To describe it briefly, much of the park encompasses and mountain range among the many found in Nevada’s basin and range country. The highest peak is over 13,000′ tall and even supports a small glacier. This high area is, at least to most people, on of the two main features of the park. The other is Lehman Caves, which I did not visit on this trip.

While much of Nevada is “basin,” and therefore dry and without a ton of vegetation, these mountain ranges can support a lot of life. They are often covered with forests, and there are lots of aspens if you look in the right places. The aspens were high on my list of photographic targets. But it seemed that I may have slightly miscalculated on the dates of peak color, and when I arrived many of the trees were still quite green. (Others had apparently just dropped leaves, and late in the visit I finally did “discover” a less-traveled canyon with lots of colorful trees.) I found one lookout high in the mountains from which I could look across a large valley, and in this valley there are quite a few aspens — solid groves of them and other trees interspersed with the conifers. This small grove caught my attention with its unusual arrangement — a ring of trees surrounding a couple of isolated trees.

In this post I continue, at least a bit, the theme of my last post: the varied rate of fall color change. In the previous post I wrote about the variations in the eastern Sierra Nevada — how early the first signs of color can occur, how late in the season it may be when the final aspen leaves fall, and the varying rates at which the colors arrive, even in limited geographical areas of the range. But if you stretch your horizons beyond the Sierra the variations are even greater.

We first “discovered” this a few years back when we visited Utah in the fall. I often make a point of not doing too much research before visiting a new area, and often this has the advantage of letting me discover the place on my own terms. On the downside, sometimes I miss the timing a bit! On that Utah trip I assumed that the colors might change on the schedule I’m used to in the Sierra… and we ended up arriving too late for the best aspen color. On the trip where I made this photograph I assumed that, since the location is virtually on the Nevada-Utah border, color would come earlier, and I arrived about a week before the end of September. In fact, the color change was underway, though still not quite peaking. But in a few spots, including the little grove where I made this photograph, some trees had almost completed their fall color season already!

On my first visit to Nevada’s Great Basin National Park near the end of September, my initial impression was that the “big features” of the park that probably draw the most visitors are two: The Lehman Caves near the entrance and visitor center and the high, alpine area close to Wheeler Peak, the highest point in the park and the second tallest in the state of Nevada. I did not visit the caves, but I did spend a fair amount of time high up near the peaks, photographing and hiking to the alpine lakes and the bristlecone pine groves. (My one regret is that I started out a bit too late on the bristlecone pine visit, and I didn’t have enough time to cover the additional two miles up to and back from the Wheeler Glacier.)

Eventually, as typically happens, I had made my acquaintance with the iconic subjects in the park, and I started to feel the familiar impulse to look around a bit for things that might not be so obvious or immediately impressive. The first foray was up a gravel road past some less developed campgrounds, where I came across at section of low cliff running alongside a gravel road and stream bed. The autumn colors were just beginning to arrive here, so I got out and wandered a bit, looking for juxtapositions of rock and tree. This little vignette attracted my attention, and I was fascinated by the pairing of a living tree full of leaves (albeit just about to turn colors and drop) and the nearby bare, white branches holding only dead leaves, with both set off from the rock behind them.
