Four Mailboxes

Four Mailboxes
“Four Mailboxes” — Four old metal mailboxes on a weathered wall in Orvieto, Italy.

When we travel we do seek out some of the famous, must-see places and things — castles, cathedrals, geological features, markets, and all the rest. But we also like to engage in a certain amount of random wandering when we can. In some ways this gives me a better sense of the character of a place than I would get by checking off all of the Big Important Things. (Don’t get me wrong. Many of those are important with good reason and are well worth visiting.) I made this photograph on one of these wandering days.

We often start out with a very general goal or idea in mind, but what we do along the way is often fairly unplanned. That was the case on this day in Orvieto, a lovely Italian hill town. Being constrained by its location on the relatively flat top of a hill, the place isn’t huge, and you can cover most of it easily on foot. So we were out walking, poking our heads into narrow alleys, looking for interesting buildings, and photographing any little bits of local character we found.

Leaf, Stone, Weathered Paint

Leaf, Stone, Weathered Paint
“Leaf, Stone, Weathered Paint” — A leaf lies on a stone sidewalk marked with weathered paint, Hakone Gardens.

This photograph was most certainly not the thing I came here to photograph. We went to the Hakone Japanese Gardens this spring, timing our visit for the peak of the cherry blossom season, and arriving in the late afternoon so that we could photograph these and many other blossoms on into the evening. Photographing old and worn out steps and dead leaves was not the main goal!

As we walked some of the hillier paths the route followed a series of old stone steps. It appeared that at one time some of the steps may have been coated with paint — red in some spots and yellow in others. But that paint was apparently not renewed, and today there are just scattered bits of it here and there on the rocks.. The single dead leave seemed to evoke a feeling quite at odds with the spring theme we were there for.

Weathered Wall

Weathered Wall
“Weathered Wall” — Abstract patterns of paint, stucco, and weathering on a wall in Orvieto, Italy

There’s really no obvious way to tell from the image that it was made in Italy — though once you know that you may recognize that beautifully worn and weathered walls are part of the landscape there. I spotted this detail as we walked through the small hill town of Orvieto during the summer of 2023.

While I usually prefer to think of such weathering as “picturesque,” you could be forgiven for regarding it as run-down, too. To be honest, the exteriors of buildings in big cities are not always pristine, and this is especially so when we get away from fancy downtowns and into regular neighborhoods. After years of visiting such places it finally occurred to me that people in these places might surrender exterior beauty, but that they transfer their aesthetic impulse to interiors. In any case, I’m happy to find subjects like this.

Arch, High Line Park

An arch structure at the High Line Park, Manhattan.

I didn’t even pause long enough to find out what this structure was. I was attracted to its form and its appearance in a space full of other linear forms, and by the low-angle and rather stark late-day light coming from the right. I suspect that it is some sort of commercial construction, but who knows? From appearances, it could be a monolith in the vein of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” though I doubt that this one was left by aliens.

The location is in Manhattan, along a section of the High Line elevated park that passes under the Standard Hotel just before the park terminates at the new Whitney Museum. This was at the end of our rather long walk that began all the way up at the west side of Central Park, during which I photographed everything from street scenes to architecture, trees to… this thing.
