This photograph and its companion (to be published here within a day) are both black and white — which I suppose connects to my earliest roots as a photographer. Decades ago when I was a child my father encouraged me and my siblings to make photographs, first using old-school Brownie cameras and later graduating to his loaners. Before long he took us into his home darkroom (a temporarily converted bathroom) and taught us to make prints. He also had a collection of photography books on a shelf that I could reach. The first landscape photograph I recall making — black and white of course — was in Yosemite Valley.

This one comes from my late May epic one-day up-and-back trip to photograph in the Valley. While the best light is early and late, on these quick visits there’s no time to waste, and I keep at it almost all day long. I made this photograph in the mid-afternoon, beneath cliffs on the north side of the Valley. This photograph posed a significant technical challenge, as the difference between the deeply shaded rock face and the brightly lit clouds at upper right was extreme. What to do? Approach like any old school photographer and make an exposure with sufficient image data to bring it to life in post!

Some who know me as a “landscape” or “nature” photographer might be surprised to hear that I love photographing in the urban environment, particularly doing street photography and looking for interesting bits a pieces of the city world. Manhattan is among the most fascinating places to photograph — there’s constant action and a density of people and subjects that is rarely equalled.

On the final morning of my recent visit I had time before heading to the airport to do one more quick walk in the area just below Central Park. Among other subjects I found the ever-present construction scaffolding above sidewalks. These structures are ostensibly there to protect pedestrians from overhead work, but one New Yorker explained to me that sometimes they are simply left up since that is easier than paying to stow them!

A view from the Panamint Mountains across Death Valley toward mountains near Las Vegas.

This is another in the “very long views” series. Like another recent photograph, it also comes from the crest of the Panamint Mountains, though this time looking generally east. As such, the view extends across Death Valley (over 6000 feet below), then over the Black Mountains, the Amargosa Range, and across the Amargosa Valley to a snow-capped ridge close to Las Vegas, Nevada. (in the full size version of this photograph remarkable details become visible — a parking lot near Artist Palette, utility poles along the road out of Death Valley.)

There is a bit of a story about the lighting in this scene. It is essentially front-lit, with the light coming from behind my camera position and shining directly on the subject. Typically, this would be about the worst kind of lighting for a landscape subject, especially when haze is present, since it produces almost no shadows and very little visibility of details. But here something compensates, namely the shadows of broken clouds which introduce some shadows into the scene and help us sense its depth.

This photograph is a different “take” on the late-March evening sand storm I photographed earlier this year in Death Valley. The forecast was for afternoon wind, so we were not surprised when the dust started to rise a few miles away from san dunes. I’m often a bit torn in situations like this — operating in the strong winds and blowing sand is not pleasant, but some very interesting photographic opportunities tend to crop up in these conditions. So I went out and got to work.

Fortunately, as I faced the dunes the wind was at my back. Even though the wind was strong enough to make photography challenging, the sand was being picked up from the dunes and blown away from me. The blowing sand, combined with the early evening light, made for some spectacular conditions. The focus in this photograph is on the plants growing on the close dunes. I had visited them a couple of months earlier, and they were mostly quite dried out. But a couple of months later and this years wet and cool spring had brought them back to life.
