I confess that I participated in a full-scale “Yosemite tourist experience” in order to get this photograph. Despite the fact that I’ve encountered California black bears many times in the high country while car camping and while backpacking – and I respect but do not fear these bears – this photograph was made during a less wild experience. I was driving back down Tioga Pass Road from Tuolumne and as I approached the right turn to pick up the main road out of the park I suddenly came upon many cars parked at odd angles along the road. I slowed, rolled my window down, and asked, “Hey, what is everyone stopped for?” The breathless reply was “a mother bear and her cubs are in the trees!”

Not having any decent bear photographs in my collection I decided to stop and see what I could get. I found a spot to park off the roadway, grabbed a camera and the longest lens, and walked back up the road to where others were staring intently across a small clearing toward trees far beyond – but I couldn’t spot a darn thing. Finally someone pointed out where the mother bear had last been seen, and I thought I spotted her head – in very poor light and crouched down low in the brush. I flipped on the image-stabilization on my 100-400mm lens, increased camera ISO to 400 (wanting to minimize blur when I hand held the camera) and got “mama” framed up. She was not a very photogenic subject, prone on the forest floor beyond some plants – but I was patient. Before long she began to move, walking among the trees, and soon her two small cubs appeared. I thought they might just be within range of the lens I had so I began to track their movements with my camera and shoot photos whenever something interesting happened. (Basically, I like to photograph wildlife – at least mammals – in much the same way that I might photograph people: I want the critter to look in a direction such that I can see its face, and if the animal is actively engaged in doing something, all the better.)

It seemed to me that “mom” was perhaps showing the cubs how to climb trees. She would edge them over to a tree and then they would start to climb. Before long both of the small cubs were scampering many feet up into the trees, and mom followed at least partway.

I photographed this bird on an early mid-April morning just before fog began to clear. I frequently walk past this small pond – Castillero Pond – when I begin my hikes into the hills, oaks, and grassland of Calero Park. I’ve learned that it is often possible to find an egret here, so I usually approach the pond slowly and quietly so as not to scare the bird off if it happens to be there. On this morning it wasn’t, but I was pleased to see that the pond had filled after late-season rain, and I found that a flock of redwing blackbirds was flying around – it seems like must be mating and nesting season for them. So I left the long lens on the camera and remained quiet and was able to get fairly close to some of these small birds. While this shot doesn’t exactly fill the frame with the bird, I like the curving form of the fence as it blurs into the distance and the subdued colors in the background.

A flock of a half dozen pelicans in flight approachs with partly cloudy sky beyond, Point Lobos State Reserve, California.

Getting this shot required preparation, the use of particular photographic equipment, quick reactions… and, as always when wildlife is concerned, a fair amount of dumb luck.

I am fascinated by the pelicans found along the Pacific coastline. For me they seem to stand apart from the other seabirds – they are bigger, their flight pattern is different, and they somehow look prehistoric when they coast by. I’m certainly no bird expert, but I’ve watched these birds enough to start to pick up on certain patterns that help me when I try to photograph them. One of the most important things I discovered is that successive groupings tend to fly almost identical paths near the coast. If you locate one of these spots and are patient and prepared, there is a very good chance that you’ll have a chance at photographing them.

On this occasion I was at Point Lobos and I had driven down to the south end of the park road and parked at the trailhead for Bird Island and China Beach. Originally I had planned to shoot seascapes, but the conditions were not quite what I had in mind, so I decided to pay more attention to the birds. Right by this parking lot there is a small cove, and along its left side as you face the sea there is a small and somewhat low peninsula of land extending seaward a bit. As I was unloading the car the first flock came by, seemingly only a few feet from the edge of the bluff. Because they were flying into a stiff wind they were not only close to the shore by they also coasted by very slowly. Needless to say, I quickly put on the long lens (100-400mm), grabbed my tripod, and took up a position opposite this peninsula and waited for the next group to come over. As luck would have it, not only did they come over – flying almost directly toward my camera position – but the clouds cleared enough to light them but stuck around enough to provide an interesting background! (Like I wrote earlier, luck…)

In this shot there is something about that bird at the upper left with wings aloft and slightly separated from the rest of the group (with their wings horizontal or lower) and, lucky for me, I managed to get the focus right on this bird. In the large version you can actually see the reflection in the eye of the bird.
