Storm Surf and Rocky Headlands

“Storm Surf and Rocky Headlands” — Late autumn storm surf and Big Sur headlands

When many people think of California they envision beautiful summer days at the beach, with warm temperatures, bright sunshine, and benign surf. Aside from the fact that it is more likely to be foggy than sunny on a summer day along much of the California coastline, that vision is limited and it misses the most impressive conditions along the coast, namely those found during the wet season extending from late autumn through the end of winter. At this time the coast is the most compelling and impressive, especially when giant Pacific storm fronts roll through and the surf can be large enough to be downright scary.

We had such conditions for a few days this December. Local newscasts warned people to stay away from the coast and off the beaches, since waves up to 40 feet high were expected. Smart Californians do stay off the beaches at times like this, but we certainly don’t stay away from the coast! I headed straight to the upper Big Sur coastline to make photographs. I’ve seen big surf here before, but as I walked out onto headlands above the rocky shoreline south of Carmel and the first big set of waves came in, I’m pretty sure I gasped audibly as they piled up on the shoreline. The biggest waves come in sets of perhaps a half dozen or so, and they raise mist and spray that lingers along the headlands until the next set of big waves arrives.

With some photographs I find it hard to explain what provoked me to stop and make and exposure, or even why I like it. Since not everything can be explained — though I may try! — I’ll share them anyway on many occasions. This is one of those images. We were walking quickly through a section of Amsterdam with very narrow streets when we passed this closed garage. At that moment I had the camera out and was photographing quite a bit… and this became one of the subjects.

There is something about the clean and simple patterns of the door, the stark contrast between very dark and very light tones, and the very simple sign above the door. In a world where such a business would more often have signage including a more lengthy and complex business name, plus descriptive text and probably things like phone numbers… this one simply states, “GARAGE.”

Amsterdam is really a place that is as dark as what you see here — or at least it wasn’t during the majority of our August 2018 visit. I heard from locals that it certainly can be cloudy there a lot, but we mostly had lovely weather, with clouds, an occasional bit of rain, but also plenty of sunshine.

However, the day we arrived it was rainy, and as we walked from our hotel (located just outside the central part of the city) towards the area of the familiar canals night was falling and it was a bit dark and mysterious, with lots of people walking along the wet and reflecting streets.

Sky and high peaks reflected in the surface of a lake in rocky alpine country

This is (yet another!) photograph from my September week in the John Muir Wilderness backcountry with a group of photographer/friends. We set up a base camp at a lake in a long valley running north/south, and photographed the immediate area and further subjects that we could reach on day hikes. The orientation of this valley gave us an unusual lighting condition — hours of blue hour light in the morning and early evening after the sun dropped below the tops of the two giant ridges to the east and west.

Our lake was mostly a fairly rocky place. The gentler portions of the shoreline featured small trees, often separated by open space and both rocky and meadowy areas. The more rugged side of the lake was the base of a gigantic talus field that extended far up the mountainside to the east. I made this photograph when light still illuminated the upper slopes of the ridge while the lake itself was in shadow. The effect was to make the landscape seem even more stark, so I photographed to emphasize the large forms of light and dark, and then chose to render it in black and white.
